Alenia wants to acquire EADS' 50% share of ATR. It would then be the holding company for Alenia's share of the RRJ project, and the two would be marketed in concert:

Well this would be a way of EADS gaining cash to fund future development in the commercial jet market if they take up this offer. There probably isn't enough marketing synergy between commercial jets and props to make it critical for EADS to stay involved in the business.

It has its ups and downs. What if the RRJ project fails? Then ATR looks bad and may go into BK.

I've been impressed with the way Alenia and Finmeccanica have progressed over the last few years, they've shown a level of rationality and progress sadly missing in Alitalia!

Given that Finmeccanica would ultimately be the one in charge, they've got pretty deep pockets. And they only have a limited exposure to the RRJ project. I think they'll be fine if things go south.
