Pilots React to Proposed US Airways/Delta Merger, Informational Picket to Express Frustration With US Airways Management's Unwillingness to Participate in Negotiations

PHOENIX, Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The US Airways and America West pilot groups will conduct informational picketing tomorrow, Thursday, November 16, at 12 p.m. EST to demonstrate their increasing frustration with management's unwillingness to fully participate in negotiations for a fair, single contract that addresses the pilots' basic needs and allows the company to realize the full synergies obtainable from merging US Airways and America West Airlines. The pilot groups, both of whom are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l., will picket at two of US Airways' (NYSE: LCC - News) largest hubs -- Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, N.C. and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Ariz.

The pilots are also commenting on US Airways' announcement today on a proposed merger with Delta Air Lines to create one of the world's largest airlines, although US Airways has yet to complete the integration of the pilot groups that is required as part of the terms of the 2005 America West/US Airways merger.

"The billions of dollars that the US Airways and America West pilots have committed to US Airways propelled our airline to profitability and opportunity. But like the planes we fly, management's grandiose plans will not take off without the pilots on board," said Captain Jack Stephan, chairman of the US Airways Master Executive Council. "So far, the company's empty promises have failed to capture all the synergies that just the US Airways/America West merger can provide," said Captain Stephan.

"We recognize US Airways senior management's enthusiasm for a merger with Delta; however, before it can be successful, management must first focus on fulfilling the promises made to their investors, customers and employees for the America West-US Airways merger," said Captain Kevin Kent, chairman of the America West Master Executive Council. "Regardless of whether or not another airline is in the mix, the pilots will no longer be exploited to make such a transaction occur."

Despite the announcement of the merger, the pilots at US Airways and America West remain focused on the issue of achieving a fair single contract, one that is commensurate with US Airways' position in the marketplace. Joint negotiations with US Airways management have been ongoing for one year, and during this time, the pilots have received only concessionary proposals that resemble the bankruptcy-driven contracts that were made as pilot investments in the airline.

"US Airways management will unravel all that we have accomplished if they insist on propagating their bankruptcy mentality at the negotiating table. The sooner they realize that those days are over, the sooner this management can make good on their promises to all employees and stakeholders alike," said Captain Stephan.

"US Airways has posted remarkable profits for three consecutive quarters due to the efforts of front-line employees such as the pilots, yet they refuse to fully engage in negotiations for a contract that recognizes our contributions. Management's decision to not focus on putting the America West/US Airways operations together for one seamless airline is bad news for our customers," said Captain Kent.

The problem is that while US has posted remarkable profits for three consecutive quarters, they ARE just three quarters - hardly a benchmark for year-over-year consistency.

I think the pilots would be in a far better position to negotiate a better deal if/when US sees six or seven profitable quarters over the next 24 months.

Good for USAir pilots. At least they and the America West pilots can find some common ground.

Hit it right on the head, IMHO. US needs to deal with their own problems and their first merger before they deal with another one- having two going on at once would be an utter mess. Let US figgure out it's labor issues first, and give back some of those massive concessions those guys took.

Wonder how an ALPA-ALPA-ALPA merger would go, as far as pilot seniority. Some guys would end up getting a raw deal. At least it wouldn't be like AA-TW, where ALPA took a backseat to APA almost 'stapling' TW's pilots to the bottom of their list.

Either way you look at it, Delta's pilots have given back too much and so have US's pilots, the companies should deal with getting financially sound enough to remove those salary cuts before they deal with gettig larger and more unweildy.

They had to give back to keep their respective airlines in the air. I do think that as profits climb, so will their salaries hopefully...

Coming back to the cuts, though... what is a LCC? lower costs to boost profits. with lower costs, offer lower fares for pax, generate a desire to fly, if the product is good, more pax will come, the process repeats itself, the airline becomes profitable, and hopefully blue skies lie ahead in the near and distant future...

even with them picketing, it's just giving management all the more reason to change names... all points aside, I think it's fairly clear that if the transaction were to go through, it had to be annouced now while DL is in bk proceedings...

Are you suggesting that US and DL pilots go back to their pre-9/11 levels by removing those salary cuts?

I don't think you can entirely blame management for not negotiating a deal here. Merging two seniority lists is extremely difficult as it is a very sensitive topic for both groups involved as someone always gets screwed. Just look at NW and how they still maintain a list or red book pilots and blue book pilots, a legacy left over from the merger between NW and Republic. ALPA would serve itself well be instituting some sort of national seniority number, as M&A activity will always occur.

Most pilots in the US, especially US Airways, are not affluent. The concessions they gave were huge.

US Airways has alot on its plate already - if this deal goes bad its gonna hurt thousands of people. Doug is taking a major risk in my opinion.

yeah, I really don't know what he is thinking. He hasn't even finished merging HP and U yet. How can he possibly put an accurate figure on the final costs of the USAir/DAL merger when he doesn't even know the final costs of his current merger?

The problem facing the pilots in negotiating a new contract has nothing to do with merging seniority lists. It has everything to do with management's demands for a "cost neutral" contract.

That just isn't going to happen with a profitable company. I agree that it would be nice to wait and see what kind of sustained profitability the company has over a few quarters, the problem is that a new contract must be worked out soon. It doesn't leave time for waiting on numbers. It's get it now, or don't get it at all.

This is nothing more than a game from management. With many airlines coming up on Section Six time, Darth Parker doesn't want to be the first to give something back. He would rather continue to operate the two companies separtately than sign a contract with the advances in work rules and compensation.
