I once thought of a three-way merger of DL/NW/CO. A merger that you describe would be a total monopoly, and would NEVER be approved.

I'm well aware of that. Note my emoticons at the end, they denote that I was not being serious at all and very much joking.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

I really do believe that Conteltedicanornus better captures the essence of commercial aviation in the states.
Slogans could include;
"You'll be Content with Conteltedicarnornus"
"Our planes are enormous, on Conteltedicarnornus"
"We're Conteltedicarnooooornus, and We Work Hard to Know Why It's Time to Fly With Us, and It Shows!"

And yet WN would still be more profitable because of their oil commodities business...

How would it be a TOTAL monopoly with SW carrying 33% of domestic traffic? Even though it would never be approved.

There have been some published reports that because of NW's golden shares in CO and the resulting ability by NW to block deals with CO, it would be difficult for CO to merge with anyone except NW.
Although the US is geographically different than most other countries, few other countries have more than two legacy carriers and two LCCs. I can see regulators allowing as few as four remaining legacy carriers, maybe even three, providing that none dominate the entire market.
Certain combinations would probably require divesting some routes, as in the case of US/DL, they would probably have to divest part of their Northeast shuttles. The weakest combination would be granted those routes.

DL+NW+CO would not be a monopoly by any stretch of the imagination.
It would only dominate airports it already dominates in three parts.

Nah, lets call it AirUSA as opposed to Air Canada, and have it become a nationalized industry just like conrail was and Amtrack now is and no jobs will be lost and everyone belongs to a union. SOCIALISM RULES!

I would sign up for their frequent flyer program. Imagine the points you'd rack up!
But I would sign up for the LCCs program as well, once they merge and form Southbluefrontran
(to be renamed Southbluefrontran Am once they swallow up a certain Trenton-based skidmark of an operation)

Central America could get into the mix and have a new merged airline called "Copatacalasca". I always thought that had a nice ring to it.

How about Ameriflop?
In the case of F9, FL, and B6, I think jetFrontierTran has a nice ring to it.
How about that new Columbus based outfit? Skybus, I think. They should merge with Virgin America, forming AmericaSkyVirgin. They could have a great paint scheme, combining Skybus' orange/yellow fuselage with Virgin America's red tail.

How about calling the new mega-carrier MonopolyAir. If you pass through ATL, ORD or LAX, deduct $200 from your airfare.
25 BAW716: Not a prayer that this kind of deal would ever get approved by the DOT. baw716
26 Futurecaptain: Would there be anywhere else to connect if this goes through? What if I fly ATL-ORD-LAX? Do I save $600 then? lol.
27 JBo: Must you rain on our fun? I'm surprised no one's discussed what kind of livery it would have. Probably just all-white with a symbolic middle finger o
