NEW YORK, Nov. 16, 2006 – Delta Air Lines is continuing to increase customer choices from its New York-JFK hub with the addition of a key transcontinental destination from JFK: Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe. Effective Feb. 15, 2007, Delta will add one daily round-trip flight between JFK and Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, blah blah blah ....

This is really nothing new, DL has operated JFK-PHX before and cancelled it more times than I can count. They even operated it with a 763 IIRC JFK-PHX-SAN.
I doubt this service announcement has anything to do with the US topic. DL has been building JFK service a lot over the past 18 months or so.
