Southwest airlines has just announced 3 daily non-stop flights from PIT-BWI. US currently serves the route with 5 daily express flights. How do you think US will respond to this announcement?
I do not believe US will be able to put up a good fight with 1 CRJ and 4 ERJs. Boeing 737s seem a lot more appealing to the average passenger.
I was thinking US might try this:
Cut back PIT-BWI from 5 to 4 daily flights. The one CRJ and 4 ERJs will turn into 4 E70s.
OR
Cut back PIT-BWI from 5 to 3 daily flights. The CRJ and 4 ERJs will turn into 1 E70 and 2 B733s/A319s!
Please everyone, let me know what you think!

I don't expect much. US doesn't seem to be interested in aggressively competing for its Pittsburgh markets.
If you look at their past responses to Southwest's additions, they've been minimal. I believe US did add some frequency/capacity between PIT and PHL, but I don't remember any significant additions to places like Chicago, Tampa, Phoenix, Orlando, etc.
Maybe you'll see one or two of the 50-seat RJ's upgraded to a E-170, but I don't expect mainline. Look at DCA. US only has one mainline flight between PIT and DCA, which is a larger market and DCA has a large US presence.

Maybe they will add some Republic flights when they begin more service in Feb.

An 86-passenger Embraer-175 aircraft? SURE, I'll fly that anyday, and I wouldn't mind making the 2hr trek to BWI should they do that!
No word on fares yet though, are there? I imagine 30-40 bucks one way...

In that past when this has happened, has US ever just dropped the flight?

Not sure. Couldnt be very high. These 80 some flights begin in Feb. Should really increase traffic in B concourse.

PIT-BWI
$39 one-way!

US Airways is not just going to drop all five flights. I think there will be some changes in capacity/aircraft!

Unfortunately, you misread my post... they're not operating 86 flights... They are operating aircraft with 86 SEATS!!
Don't feel bad. I did that same thing when I posted about Republic doing this. I read the PR on the flypittsburgh website and thought they were adding 60 fights to operate 86 flights, but that 86 refers to the number of seats on each aircraft... I tried to go back and fix that, but someone else already beat me to it and posted that my interpretation of that PR was off...

I don't really expect much at all. We must remember that BWI used to be a US foucus city and that was the only reason PIT-BWI stayed mainline for as long as it did in the early 00's. US will probubly do nothing. about this. I expect to only see cutbacks in capactiy at this point.
Quoting ATLAaron (Reply 4): In that past when this has happened, has US ever just dropped the flight?
Depending on how WN does on this flight, this COULD happen. Just look at what happened with US service with PIT-ATL. US could not compeat with DL and FL.

Yet, FL was the one to blink first on PIT-PHL and New York, and I think one other route...

MDW would be that other city you were thinking about. They could never make any of those routes work, which is unfortunate. I flew on PIT-LGA on FL many a times and loved it. However, the loads sucked big time.

Ah, I wasn't sure if it was that one or BOS, but I know that FL never served BOS, so it must've been MDW...

Which was unfortunate. They could've been the way out of rediculous fares on US, but US was the big fish in the pond. I hope B6 doesn't go that way, I REALLY hope they don't...

FL serves BOS or did you mean non-stop from PIT? Because for a direct flight to BOS on FL you would have to go over to CAK.

I wouldn't hold my breath for mainline. Nor would I really hold it for E70s. US has lots of service to their DCA focus city, plus props to Dulles. No sense throwing capacity away against WN.
BWI is a shell of its former self. Hell, I'm surprised they still keep the club open.

I highly doubt US will drop PIT-BWI. If they match the low-fares, O&D is going to for sure go up. WN has increased O&D on every route except PIT-LAS so far!
