Reconstructing My Dad's Journey (1964)

I'm trying to reconstruct my Dad's journey from HAV to MAD on 18 Sep, 1964.

This is what I know so far through him:

He flew on a Bristol Britannia from HAV (Havana) - YQX (Gander) - PRG (Prague).

He says it was CSA but can't find info on CSA having any Bristol Britannia. Only CUBANA airlines. He remembers the cabin crew as all male and from the Czech Republic.

From: PRG (Prague) he flew to ORY (Paris, Orly) on a Russian jet (twin engine mounted.. on or in wings) No airline or aircraft model found so far.

From: ORY (Paris, Orly) to MAD (Madrid) on Air France Sud SE-210 Caravelle III. He remembers the aircraft name and when I showed him the pics from Air France, he also remembers the paint scheme. (Iberia had a red "cheat" line, and he remembers the dark blue / black of Air France)

This was an emotional time for my Dad as he left his family to defect from Cuba at the time and start a new life. He never saw his family again. I know these flights were operated for a while and would take people defecting from Cuba on this particular route. He remembers many details of his trip except for the night portions of his 2 day trip when he boarded the "unknown" airline/aircraft in PRG for ORY. He just noted the location of the engines being mounted on the wings, or in them.

I would like to get some Airline info, and Aircraft types to surprise him with some pics and maybe a few model airplanes of his trip.

I will take a shot at it.

The best guess I can make is that in 1964, at the time of your Dad's flights, he would not have been on a Bristol Britannia on CSA but it could have been an Ilyushin IL-18 four engine turboprop, as they operated a number of those aircraft at CSA at that time. Or it could have been a Cubana Bristol Brittania.

I don't know if they operated across the Atlantic at the time. They could have. Maybe someone else on here can tell you that.

While here is a Bristol Brittania from Cubana Airlines which did operate across the Atlantic through Gander at the time.

In fact,, this photo was taken in Shannon, Ireland in the 1960's.

As you can see, they were of very similar configuration and could have easily been misidentified.

As for the Russian built twin engine jet, it was most likely a Tupolev 104 with engines embedded in the wing roots. Like this one.

My wife is also from Cuba and went through a similar experience to your Dad. I hope that this has been helpful.

CUBANA CU476 operates every Tuesday out of Havana on a Bristol Britannia, with a tech stop in Bermuda

The only Russian twin jet on a scheduled flight, again, on CSA Czechoslovakia Airlines.

Wow, thanks for the help. I will pass this on to my Dad. I know he's 100% sure the first few legs of his journey was on a Bristol Britannia, and that it was on CSA. He remembers going to the offices of CSA to book his flight, and the crew being from the Czech republic. I'm wondering if back then did other airlines operate flights for one another.

I had a similar experience when I was 19 years old, traveling from MAD - JFK on SPANTAX. When I arrived at Barajas airport, the flight was supposed to be a SPANTAX DC-10. Instead, it was an IBERIA 727 which took us to Santander. There, an ATA L-1011 flew us the rest of the way. Inside, all of the seatback covers had the SPANTAX logo. The ATA crew told us they were operating several flights for SPANTAX for the summer.

I'm wondering if CUBANA operated some flights for CSA around that time in 1964 using the Bristol Britannias.
