SINGAPORE Airlines bagged two of Britain's leading airline travel awards this week.

First, readers of the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph voted SIA as the world's Best Scheduled Airline.

Then, on Wednesday, it won the coveted Business Traveller magazine award for Best Long Haul Airline.

The Business Traveller award was accepted by the director-general of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Mr Wong Woon Liong, at a luncheon attended by over 250 travel-industry VIPs here.

SIA is the inaugural winner of the Telegraph's Best Scheduled Airline award as it is a newly-created honour to mark the new millennium.

A spokesman for the Telegraph, Ms Clare Bruce, told The Straits Times: ""Our awards allow readers to express their likes and dislikes of modern travel. It is the most significant consumer study of the travel tastes and habits of the British public."

"It represents the views of more than 3-1/2 million readers of the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph, an enormous constituency of British holiday-makers.''

Even though the vast majority of Telegraph readers who voted are Britons, they voted their national flag-carrier British Airways into seventh position.

After Singapore Airlines came Emirates, followed by Virgin Atlantic.

At the same time, readers of the Telegraph and Business Traveller both rated Changi as the best airport in the world.

There was an extra category for Best Duty-Free Airport in Business Traveller, and Changi won that also, ahead of such airports as Dubai and Hongkong.
