I arrived to VTE on an international flight (from LPQ via PKZ) and transferred to a domestic flight to LPQ back in March. This is what I remember...
Quoting Pe@rson (Thread starter): 1) Would I require a plane ticket from VTE to gain access to the terminal? I don't have a ticket (travelling overland).
International flights use the new building and domestic flights are located in the old building. You can access both buildings without a ticket up until security. No views from those areas, though, IIRC.
Quoting Pe@rson (Thread starter): 2) Is there any location while landside in the terminal to see the movements?
I think there might be some room for that. Are you going to LPQ, too? At least there you have a good view of landing and departing flighs.

I flew from VTE to LPQ earlier this year, the domestic terminal is fairly open to walk around, but has nothing inside it, it's very old fashioned in a 50s/60s communist era way, so worth a look! It's a very quiet airport, very few flights there, I took a Lao ATR72. The ternminals are small, so you should be able to see 'around' them, just watch the police just in case
I hope you're enjoying Vientiane, I thought it was friendly, laid back place. I went overland from Bangkok, then flew onwards to Luang Prabang

Having been several times at VTE between 1996-2005 I can say following:

No, you won't. No problem to get around the International and Domestic airport building as such.
Quoting Pe@rson (Thread starter): 2) Is there any location while landside in the terminal to see the movements?
On the first floor in the domestic terminal (take the stairs which are in front after entering the building). There is a viewing area but the windows are not very clean. If you come here by own transportation from the City, take the last turn right before arriving at the terminal building. You will have an overview on the runway, tarmac and the Lao Air Force area. There might be the An74, some old QV AN4 and Mil Mi8's. However, be careful while doing so as they don't like you taking pictures in this area.
The DPR Lao is one of the greatest places to be visited in Asia (or even in the World!). Enjoy it and lots of fun there!

Hi folks,
Thanks for your replies.
I decided to visit VTE for a couple of hours late yesterday afternoon/early evening.
Surprisingly, its international terminal was bright, modern, spacious and organised. But more unexpectedly, it possessed two remarkably good observation decks on the third floor. Of those, only one was open, from which I had an excellent view of the runway, 1 stand (the others were partially obscured by roofing), the A.T.C.T., the taxiways and some parked aircraft in front of the Lao Air hanger.
In contrast to VTE's international terminal, its domestic one was dark and quite unappealing. I didn't much explore it, but I will tomorrow: I'll be flying VTE-LPQ (my girlfriend and I just booked it). Alas, it'll be on the AT7 and not one of its Chinese M machines, but hey: it'll be great.

I remember having used this terminal as International terminal back in 1996/7. The current International terminal only opened around 1999-2000. Before, the terminal which is now used for Domestic flights was the international one and on the right side (when entering) there was an even smaller building which was used as domestic terminal! Similar for LPQ, the terminal being used was a very small beton building only!

Hi again,
The observation deck in the international area was temporarily closed on the 24th. Perhaps some official was visiting?
The glass windows in the domestic terminal afforded good views, both landside and airside.
We thoroughly enjoyed our flight from VTE to LPQ with QV on the MA60. The scenery was amazing! So green, so lush. It took 40 minutes at FL140. The aircraft was comfortable and pleasant.
From where we're staying in Luang P, about 5 min walk from the main area, the approaching aircraft, QV MA60/AT7 and Bangkok AT7s, fly low, perhaps at 500ft.
I'm so glad that my girlfriend and I have the opportunity to travel together for 3 months each year.
Our remaining flights between now and Feb 9th are:

Quoting Pe@rson (Reply 7): Do you know what the viewing is like airside and landside at both PNH and REP?
Can't remember at PNH. From the domestic terminal there is a decent view and maybe between the two terminals. REP is a very small airport which offers view outside the terminal which aren't that bad.
