Actually its becoming more and more of a year-round travel market particularly as the local population continues to grow as a result of the LA metro area shifting eastwards.
The Coachella Valley area which includes Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Ranch Mirage has seen near 6% annual population growth rates, plus add in folks from communities such as Moreno Valley, Redlands, Banning which might find using PSP more convenient then heading West to ONT.
More and more airlines are realising this and are offering ever growing year-round flights to the area. PSP as a result continues to experience strong growth in volumes which has grown at 7.6% so far this year, the fastest of any SoCal airport.

This will be very interesting for PSP. As another a.netter already stated, the pax traffic there is very healthy, up nearly 8% from what was a record year in 2005. All indications are that the airport will serve about 1,525,000 passengers this year, more than 100K above last year. I do know that profits on the route were not consistent, but that it was showing marked improvement. When I last heard (about 4mos ago), CO management was solidly behind the route. With the loss of several dozen aircraft, however, PSP may have been one of those unfortunate low-hanging fruit routes.
PSP may, in fact, revert to being a seasonal mainline route for CO. That's the way it began back in the late 90s. The XRJ was the aircraft that made year-round PSP-IAH possible, otherwise, it would have continued as seasonal if operated by mainline equipment.
This will only mean more business for AA, since it operated 2x daily PSP-DFW during the summer for the first time ever this year, and the load factor was in the upper 80s throughout, with a doubling of capacity. AA's next step for PSP is likely to be a year-round ORD flight.
I would hate to see CO leave PSP, or reduce to seasonal service, because I put in a lot of time and effort into getting it into place, especially the year-round upgrade. But it may be inevitable, given the current circumstances concerning the fleet in 2007. It may not be the market as much as it is aircraft constraints. In summer 2005, the flight operated as a red-eye for the first time, because it was either that or nothing. This was the case once again for summer 2006. So the fleet is already spread pretty thin, and it's just going to get worse if no replacement carrier is selected for the ERJs soon to be lost.

Blame Kellner and Smisek for trying to lowball Expressjet. They should've known that no one else has 50 seat aircraft with the range to serve PSP, BOI, and others. Expect to see more CO routes disappear soon.
