Taxiway Extension At Luton Airport Runway?

I was wondering whether there were any plans to extend the taxiway at Luton Airport, to meet at each end of the runway.

Edinburgh Airport had this done a couple of years back, to save back tracking, which was in turn causing congestion on the taxiways.

Since Luton Airport carries a similar amount of passengers than Edinburgh (a bit more than EDI actually!), surely it is time for Luton to have the same work done to it?

I agree... I usually spot at Luton Airport, And although the back tracking can somewhat be fun to see sometimes when there's an aircraft about to land and your thinking whoo he better hurry up.... But i thought Luton were extending the runway? Or doing something with it.. Haven't they got a major project going for after the year 2010?

No plans for this in the pipeline at the moment and will probably not be decided until they decide what they are doing with runway 08/26.

There are talks of the runway being extended to 9500ft and other plans for a brand realligned new runway and the existing runway will operate as a spare like at LGW. But never both being used at the same time.

Knowing the owners of LTN it will be years away until any decision is made, but I suppose they dont have the money of BAA who own EDI.

On Thursday last week I flew FR LTN-MLA and we didn't even back track down the runway, we had a full load on a 738 and 3.5hr flight ahead of us and scared the shit out of me. Esspecially when the U2 737 aircraft infront us flying up to GLA back tracked and he would have had a far lighter load. I guess we only had about 5000ft of runway to use, but the 738 cleared it easily and a very impressive take off performance!

I think Luton Airport is a mess at the moment.

The actual terminal is excellent, but the surrounding aprons and taxiways look terrible from the air. As are most airports in the UK.

If you look at Stansted's or Atlanta's taxiways, they are clean cut, and well planned out. I think some serious development needs to be undertaken.

Well, if you look at the picture below, you'll see how ATL changed in almost 30 years. And STN has also changed quit a lot. So maybe is it the turn of LTN to have a big change.If I'm not wrong, STN old terminals are on the left. Correct me if that's not right.

This work would include some landfilling on the northern end of the runway (= righthand side in the picture in reply #8) as terrain falls quite a number of feet where the bushes are visible.
I agree that a full-length taxiway especially to the northern end of the runway would add considerable runway capacity at LTN at reasonable costs.
