More and more 777-300s are replacing the 747 at many airlines or on many routes. Which routes currently will the 777-300 not be enough in terms of capacity or capability compared to the 747-400 or -8I ? Some airlines have found the 777 to be more suitable even though it accomodates less passenger that the 747 and some have the need for the much larger A380. However there must be some routes left where the 747 is still the ideal aircraft. I know that many 747s have not hit their replacement cycle, so hopefully we will see some good orders for 747-8I.

777 Vrs 747 When Is The 777 Just Not Enough?
When the yearly revenue from a 747 out weighs the superior 777-300ER economics. More cost effective to remove 100 economy seats from a service, then pay the trip costs of a 747 year round.
An example, Sydney/LAX for Qantas, the revenue on this service out weighs the 777 economics. If additional airlines start up service on this route, it could decrease the yield making the 777 a better solution.

Dense routes in Asia, some European to Asian routes, and a few north American to Asian routes.

Very good question I think it varies airline to airline. Here at ORD 747's used to be a given for the Asian routes but now more and more 777ER's are taking their place. To Europe it has long been a mix of 767/777 & A330/340 aircraft. What is interesting is that KLM still operates 747's on the majority of the flights to ORD while other carriers such as AF, BA, and LH have switched to other aircraft.
