Flashback: THe Birth Of Southwest At SNA

Here's where it started, pictures taken circa November 1994. Note the ever so tiny section of the tail that had the Southwest colors.

What was it, two flights a day to SLC at first with the takeover. I'm still mad that wrong time, wrong place, because without the purchase of Morris Air, I think America West would have become much larger and held their ground in SNA moreso than these days. Hit or miss, service has been offered to SEA, RNO, SFO, SMF, LAS, PHX, JFK and where else that I am missing. All of those always hit at just the wrong time. Reno service, competed against Reno Air and AA which pulled the flights shortly thereafter, so, a couple months later, HP would have been all alone. SEA competed directly with AS, but also, AA had two nonstops at the time also flying the coastal route, quickly pulled by both secondary airlines to AS on that route. SFO was way back when they tried the California corridor service out of LGB/SNA and didnt last more than half a year or so, while the SMF service was kept for quite sometime, all the way up until SWA announcing the route. With the CRJ900 doing some of the flying that they tried, like the LAX, SAN, Mexico and Canadian routes, I wonder what difference HP would have had if they would have had the CRj900 at that time to break into the markets, grab some market share with such a high percentage of HP f.f living in the Orange County area, and if proven, then upgrade flights to B737-300 like they tried using.

I love looking at older Morris Air timetables and how their route structure was. Really more surprised and wish I could ever find articles, clips, or stats on thier Laughlin flights when they had service to LAX, OAK, SLC AND SJC at different times. Flights always arrived between 9-11pm and departed 40 minutes later usually reloaded and ready to fly.

I also never knew until just this past week that back in the early early days that Morris Air offered jet service out of Twin Falls, Idaho to LAX and SLC. Wonder why that was such an early route for the airline, snowbirds?

Its pretty amazing how SWA has managed to become the largest carrier in the state of California in such a short time frame.

The airline is number one in boardings at SAN, SNA, ONT, BUR, OAK, SMF and SJC, while number #3 at LAX.

It was pretty easy when US decided to dump all of PSA's routes in the early 90's...WN jumped right in and took over.

Ahh yes that was the idea initially. However they realized that their cost structure did NOT match that of PSA and were losing money on the routes. It was VERY sad....PSA had spent decades building the market in CA...and CA loved them!

Thank American (acquiring and closing down the AirCal network and Reno Air network).

From what I read American West was making some money on the SFO-SNA route, but decided to move the planes to a new market. HP entered the market at the same time United was going to turn the route over to UnitedExpress (WestAir) which caused some UA passengers to switch because they didn't want to make the hike then bus ride over to the Express terminal. Then suddenly UA mainline was back on the route.

When I worked as a ramprat for DL at OAK during the summers, Morris Air had the gate adjacent to us. Their last flight out of OAK was the Laughlin flight. I always thought it was an unusual flight. I asked the gate agents quite often how those flights were doing. The usual response was ok...but very rarely was it booked solid.

I liked the fact that Morris Air was quite a large airline at OAK before it was taken over by SWA. They flew to many places like FAT, EUG, PDX, SEA, BOI, TUS and SLC. I have some of the early pictures when they were using Ryan Air and Sierra Pacific. I know...they used Skyworld before that with 727-100 and 707 equipment.

It was sad to see Morris Air go.
