I know its been discussed abt IADs 2 new runways-the future 19R/1L (4th rwy) and the 30R/12L (future 5th rwy), but I am wondering if they have started construction on the 4th runway already, Dulles website doesn't say anything, except the fact that construction will be complete in 2008.

How long does it take to construct a runway from start to finish?

I hope i didn't miss this info on the previous threads, if i did, apologies in advance.

They have started construction on the new 19R/1L. The area is cleared and they are working on it all the time it seems like. I heard someone say it was supposed to be open within a year. That seems fast to me - but I have no idea.

I believe they have started the construction on the new 1/19. 30R/12L is aways off though. They are knocking down the trees West of current 1L/19R. I would assume this is in preparation for the RWY construction. I know somewhere in all of this they are relocating the NWS station that was just West of IAD.

How does wind direction at IAD decide departing and arriving traffic?? I wonder how they would use the 19L/1R, 19C/1C and 19R/1L. I know planes coming from north cross east of the airport and then turn around to land on the 1s and vice versa when planes come from south. Do they ever use rwy 30 for landings?? If not, will they use it when the parallel rwy is built in the future?

They do use RWY 30 for landings. This is more typical during the morning and late evening hours, or if there is terrible weather, but it is definitely done and I have landed on RWY 30 several times myself on regular pax flights.

That's interesting as I have *never* seen planes landing on 30. I bet it's quite a sight! Plenty of landings on 12 though.

It happens several times a year, but that's it. Approach is to 1R, circle to land 30.

So, basically, planes follow Route 50 West? Aren't there buildings getting near to being in the way there?

I live underneath the approach for IAD 30 and I can attest that it is used for landing when the wind is bad enough. I actually wish that it would happen more often so that I see 747s more frequently!

They actually follow (to a certain extent) Highway 28 as if they are approaching 1R then after crossing Highway 50 they make a left turn toward 30. No buildings are in the way.

In April 2004, I was flying LAX-IAD on a 744, back before UA downgraded to a 777. It was very bumpy on inital approach, and we did indeed land on 30. We seemed to make a last minute left turn, as the wings seemed VERY close to the trees. I find it interesting that 30 is used on windy days because it is not an instrument equipped runway-only visual.

I flew in and out of IAD a few weeks ago and the construction was manifest. We taxied near enough that I could see the depth of the excavation.

I departed on 30 Friday enroute DEN. Got a great view of the new runway construction. I had no idea they were building it so far away from existing 1L.

Not only is there a 4th runway under construction, there is a fifth runway parallel to 12-30 in the plan.

Yup read it many times. Just wanted to know if the construction started on the future 19R/1L and indeed it has.

I think the 5th runway is a few years away though.

Also is the new control tower operational?
