Why No FLL To Brazil Flights?

One would think with the huge and steadily growing Brasilian population in Central and Northern Broward County that we might see flights to FLL from Brazil in the near future. Is this a lack of customs facilities in Fort Lauderdale, are their plans to build a larger and better international terminal, etc.?

I would think a TAM 330 or AA 767, etc. would do well on the flight if it ever came into fruition. I live in Deerfield Beach and know that it is referred to sometimes as the 'Rio of South Florida'. In fact, the census estimates nearly 40,000 Brazilians in the area with restaurants, bakeries, etc. One plaza nearby is completely taken over by our fun friends from the south.

So what do you think...the population continues to grow, FLL continues to grow...seems inevitable that FLL will see a flight.

I would say lack of even half decient customes facilities. Also FLLs 9000ft runway would also be a factor with posable weight restrictions.

Business traffic goes to Miami. Simple as that. FLL-Brazil won't happen for a long, long time.

FLL has had scheduled flights from South Africa and Europe. The runway is not a factor.

Well, maybe the "long, long time" is a bit exaggerated, but certain to say it won't be in the near future.

Yep, the runway doesn't matter terribly for these reasons. FLL has seen regularly scheduled flights from a number of locales using heavies, so it's not an excuse. The customs facilities, otoh, are a real liability. Of course, part of the expansion plans for FLL include a brand new terminal facility replacing the existing international structure; presumably, this would improve the customs facilities greatly.

The South African flights were Fuel stops on the way to ATL and didn't offload pax. And most of the EU charters had fuel stops in BGR and north eastern canada.

Not only did they offload pax, but SA codeshared on Delta's morning FLL-LGA and FLL-MCO flights, so people traveling to Orlando and LaGuardia could get there quicker. On average, 30% of the plane got off in Lauderdale.

Many of the EU scheduled flights - Condor, Martinair, Icelandair, and Laker Airways - did not stop anywhere.

I agree.......while there maybe some VFR traffic and lower yeild tourist traffic that would prefer service into FLL, MIA is where the biz traffic is and thats what is important for longerhaul services to Brazil. Of course, AA offers many connections at MIA for pax travelling beyond, which helps the case for MIA.

There are plans to expand the international facilities at FLL......the timetable is wholly unclear. The new terminal would also serve as a hub terminal for Spirit Airlines.

Yes, Deerfield does have a large Brazlian population......and are potential pax, but they (and their friends and family that may visit) are looking for lower fares when travelling, most leisure pax are, thus its unlikely that a profitable flight would develop.......in any case, MIA is just 25 miles down the I95.

TransBrasil used to fly into FLL until they went bankrupt a few years ago. I believe they used Boeing 767-300/ER's. On another note I prefer FLL to MIA.

Transbrasil flew to MIA and MCO until bankruptcy. I am 90% positive they never flew to FLL, and 100% they never flew there since at least 1995.

Howdy, Let me do some research. I knew they flew into MIA and MCO but I saw a Transbrasil 763 in FLL back on 2001.

TransBrasil did not fly to FLL, it was MIA, MCO and IAD.

Agreed......the holiday flights that did make stops did so because of equipment used, not because of the facilities at FLL. For example, some of the flights utilized 752s that could not make it nonstop all the way between FLL and Northern Europe.

MAH4546/Dutchjet, I did some reviews and you both are correct. Transbrasil never did fly into FLL. I still have no idea why I saw a Transbrasil 763 in FLL in July of 01 though. Weird.

Thanks guys for the info!  Smile

Easily a Miami or Orlando diversion. Even though they are very close, when the weather is bad at Miami, it still might be good at FLL. FLL gets MIA diversions all the time.

Yes, I have some photos (although not on here - but myaviation.net) of an Alitalia 767, Martinair MD-11, Polar Air Cargo DC-10, etc. among others which were diverted to FLL due to storms at MIA on a bad May day.
