Iberia announced plans to fly to Cali (Colombia) from Spain yesterday, although the company recognized that Colombia and Spain must renegotiate the bilateral treaty that regulates airlines operations between both countries if Iberia is to fly to Cali. Iberia´s manager in Colombia said that Cali is the second city that adds more passenger flow to its planes after Bogota.

My personal opinion is that is always good to have more international airlines flying to a single airport (increase in competition for example), but in this particular case I would like to see Avianca increasing its current 2x flights from CLO to MAD to 3x or even 4x.

IB realises that Avianca is doing very well on the Madrid to Cali route, and of course they will want to have a piece of the cake, and a big one at that.

The bilateral agreement between Colombia and Spain definitely needs updating, given the strong demand. It was, in fact , Air Madrid who was lobbying for an open skies. They even said they would fly to Medellin if that became a reality.

I am sure that theyre negotiations under way now, and that would probably mean that IB can fly to Cali, and that AV can increase its frequencies, both from Cali and on the Bogota - Barcelona route, probably dropping ALC.

Air Madrid could also fly to MDE, if there are any willing customers to risk its reputation, and possibilities of further frequencies for Air comet.

And of course, there could be newcomers too, as it has been rumoured that there are negotiations for a spanish airline to enter the colombian market. Whether that is Air Europa or Air Asturias is yet to be seen..

Very good! CLO-MAD demand is high. IB could do a 3x weekly flight. Im sure AV will respond by dropping ALC, a third weekly to BCN and a third weekly on CLO-MAD.

Agree with you. If IB might need choose between a new destination in Bolivia or this flight to CLO, it seems more logical to choose Bolivia, as IB already has code-share agreement with AV in CLO-MAD and CLO-BOG routes. Number aircraft are always very limited for daily operations.

That's right.

I don't see a new Spanish carrier flying Colombia in schedule basis. UX withdrew from the Ecuador market due to intense competition; right now they have a code-share agreement with IB and other agreements with some airlines to connect at CCS with the UX flight.

Time flies! Enjoy life!

Let us wait and see. I understand that there have been talks between the Colombian ambassador and directives from a spanish airline that were interested in serving Colombia. The market can still take some more capacity and be healthy.

I forgot to mention that Air Comet would happily go to a daily frequency on the BOG route if they were allowed.
And talking of them, I noticed that they are supposed to be using an A330 for BOG these days. Where have they got this type from? As it would not be one of their brand new ones yet.

You are completely right, look:

25-Nov-2006 A332/Q Barajas (LEMD) Eldorado Int'l (SKBO) 10:35AM GMT Diverted

Staus comes out as Diverted to MDSD, but I think this is just a regular/technical stop for MPD901. Let me see who this A332 belongs too, I'll get back to you as soon as I know  Wink. I have a strange feeling its EC-IYB or EC-IYN from Air Madrid but I am very sure they are either grounded and NM couldn't possibly cope lending an aircraft to Air Plus Comet in the mess they are in.

The only flight Air Madrid is starting is its last flight to AENA's offices and getting its AOC revoked.

Yep, summed up perfectly.

I hope it happens: more competition can only be good for the Colombian economy and (selfishly I hope!) might lead to lower ticket prices!
