Hi, can someone suggest a few aviation schools in the Los Angeles region? I am looking to get a ppl, so I can pursue recreational flying. I am not looking into flying as a career. I can only attend school in the evenings and weekend (over a few months).

Also, what is the range of fees to expect?

What area in LA do you live in? Just about every airport has a flight school... SMO, TOA, VNY etc..

I'd say either Santa Monica which has a fair share of schools

or Torrance

While Hawthorne is not far away either, none of the FBO's or schools there apealed to me much.

Best bet is to drop by the schools and get a feel for them along with discussing things such as cost, length of study, availability of instructors etc..

The LA Metro Area is not an ideal place to do primary training. Too much traffic, smog, lack of practice areas, and very high prices. If I were you I'd go somewhere on the outskirts, like riverside (ATP), Carlsbad (Pinnacle Aviation) or maybe Van Nuys.

Other than the high prices, I think the LA area is the ideal place to learn to fly. I did my primary training at FUL (Fullerton, CA) and my advanced training at POC (La Verne, CA). Yes, they were busy, but you learned how do deal wth it. If you can do it in LA, you can do it anywhere.

I cannot agree more! Learning to fly in a busy terminal area, while (perhaps) more costly, prepares you so much for for the rigors of flying in what will certainly be, as time goes by, and increasing;y-demanding airspace system.

I will also endorse FUL as an outstanding field, and a good compromise between too-crowded, and too-far.

Fullerton, as a community, and KFUL, as an airport, are two of the few things I miss from having once lived in SoCal.

While we could argue about the merits of learning in a busy environment like LA (personally I see it as a plus), one needs to consider some other factors also.

Sure, the cost in LA might be slightly higher than some outlying communities however how much fun is it to sit on a freeway for hours trying to reach the airport? I've always enjoyed being able to access several local airports in less then 30mins. The time and stress I incur in traffic is well worth avoiding. Better to be flying over the cars on the freeways then sitting in one.

In addition one thing I found quite helpful was by flying out of ones own local airport especially during basic VFR flying was having knowledge of the local area and its land marks. Taking a student with very little familiarity to the region only adds another layer of complexity to the training. Being well versed can be quite helpfull incase one runs into any type of trouble from weather to equipment issues.

I rent from California Flight Center and LGB (they are right next to the C-17 roll out apron) and they have really nice planes and a lot too. They also have a location at Hawthorne. I would look into them. I never did any training with them (did it all at Embry-Riddle) but it seems like a really good FBO to be associated with. And all their Cessna's are new too (well 2003ish and newer).

VNY is actually within the boundaries of the City of Los Angeles, so I don't know how it is on the outskirts. In reality, the Los Angeles area is actually one of the best deals in aviation because not only does it allow you to train with impunity, the sheer number of flight schools and small airports means that competition keeps prices low. The only thing working against you are fuel prices, but I found that when I was looking to train a few years ago that Los Angeles area schools were much cheaper than those in New Orleans, where gas is cheaper.

Anyway, if you don't mind driving to LGB, that is probably your best bet. They have a flying club there that offers rather cheap flight training.

Could not disagree more, LA area is THE best place to train. You get the busy ATC experience, different airspace experience, a feel for different airports from small like TOA to complex like LGB and SNA. Prices are not higher than the SAN area, and would not make seance to drive to CRQ or MRY with the prices of gas right now. TOA and LGB have great flight schools with new planes, SNA has good schools but are a little more expensive. Look at South Bay aviation or Rolling hills aviation at Torrance, and LGB flight center or flight pros at Long Beach. Rainbow is a good school but extremely busy making it hard to get a rental sometimes. Have fun, and be safe. Make sure to always take advantage of SOICAL flight following because there is a LOT of traffic in the LA area.
