Hi,

I don't know if this subject has been debated already, but I wonder how many commercial planes are flying all over the world at the same time ?

Let's say at noon at GMT time are any other time
how to calculate ?

On another forum someone answered that 260 000 pax (Discovery channel) would be in the air at the same time. If you count 100 pax/plane it makes
2600 planes in the sky at the same time...

regards
marcus

Theres more than 2600 planes over the US at certain tims of day, so it has to be more than that for the world.

Download from staralliance.com their screen saver and you can see how many planes are flying at the same time, (only Star Alliance carriers though)

And even though it is not accurate as it's based not on real time but on Star's time table you can see it will be more then 2,600 planes

Well, in US airspace there are around 5000 in the air at any one time, so use that as a basis for the rest of the world.

An estimate in other threads on this subject is 20,000-30,000, which is at least the right order of magnitude  Wink

5000 "commercial" flights-- i.e. airliners?

Yes, right now for example there are around 5700 IFR flights, with approx 4300 of 'em airliners ...perhaps 75%. So I'll stick with average 5000 ball park  Wink

FlightAware doesn't the entire world, just to/from/in the US.

I would suppose there is about 15,000-20,000 flights in the air at peak time, probably more This is just a wild guess though.
