A B744 of KLM with 277 pax on its way to Bangkok returned to Schiphol short after take off yesterday evening. After dropping its fuel into the North Sea (poor fishes) the Jumbo landed safely at Amsterdam Airport. Their was no panic on board. One of the doors was not well closed. It was no defect. Though as precaution the involved emergency door slide has now been replaced. This took some time and therefore the pax were brought to hotels for the night. I thought a not well closed door should have been alarmed in the cockpit.....before take off, right?

normally the crew make a pre-flight security check of all flights. the cabin attendants must report the check of the doors...

I don't know about large aircraft, but pressurization in our planes can push the door out just enough to unmake an out-of-adjustment door switch. This would give an indication in the cockpit that the door is unsafe and a subsequent air return. This condition would not be evident until airborne as cabin pressure rises.

When fuel is dumped, it actually vaporizes before it could hit the water.

Now had this been BA, they'd have decided to continue to Bankok. Just fly a bit lower - it wouldn't cause too much pax inconvenience.

KL877/27NOV is now scheduled to depart AMS today, November 28 at 3pm local time or almost 19 hours behind schedule, because KLM does not have an operational spare available. It is due to return to AMS with a delay of about 34 hours because the aircraft will make an overnight stop at BKK for reasons of crew rest.

I reckon they will try to book as many pax as possible on AF. Once again the whole network trips because of one (albeit major) delay.
Any thoughts on letting AF metal substituting one CDG-AMS flight and then continuing to BKK. Can this make economic sense?

Given that most flights to and from Asia are currently packed, there is really no other solution for KLM than to operate this flight as I reckon very few alternatives are available. Let's also not forget that this is a combi operation and that the BKK-TPE-BKK sectors are usually packed with cargo, wome of which might be high priority. Canceling this flight becomes as such a no no.

KLM's B74E seats 280 passengers in a 42C/238Y configuration. There were as such at least 3 vacant seats, perhaps more if there were infants on board.
