Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Air Berlin Plc, Europe's No. 3 discount carrier, said it will order 60 Boeing Co. planes valued at $4.2 billion, sending its stock to a record decline on concern about how the airline will finance the purchase.

Air Berlin fell 2.16 euros, or 13 percent, to 14.08 euros, the most since its initial public offering in May. Europe's third-largest discount carrier cut its 2006 forecast for earnings before interest and tax as a percentage of sales and said it doesn't know how it will pay for 60 new Boeing Co. planes valued at $4.2 billion

Interesting, some time ago they ordered A320s, now Boeing planes again, and in 3 years again A320s?

Strange policy, but if they have the money, this might be a good deal. But I doubt Air Berlin will grow so much that they need 60 additional planes.

...“By awarding this large contract, we are securing a favourable delivery price for the long-term,” says Air Berlin chief executive Joachim Hunold.

“As was the case in the past, we aim to renew our fleet every six to eight years in order to be able to deploy the least noise-polluting and the most fuel-efficient and cost-efficient aircraft...”

Its amazing how Boeings attitude has changed so much in two years.

Boeing was desperate for Air Berlin not to expand, as they feel it will lead to the airlines demise. I am not able to share my source(s) but they are from Boeing senior mananagment.

The change in attitude has won them an amazing order,... congratulations to Boeing. This is a real cherry on the top of the cake.

Do you want to start to review the old threads to see how much Airbus and its supporter has eaten its own words?

Cheers,
