The slots were sold to BA when LX were severely cash strapped and about to enter the Oneworld alliance. At the time LX was codesharing on BA flights out of Terminal 4 to Geneva.
In the end LX did not proceed with the closer alliance with BA, principally due to disagreements with merging Travel Club members into the Executive Club.
The result of Swiss's dalliance with BA is that they lots these valuable slots. It also saw the end of the daily widebody service (used to be MD11's, then A330's) into Heathrow serving connecting traffic to ZRH. All in all, a strategic mistake on the part of LX management at the time.
I am very surprised that LX has not tried to aqcuire more slots to resume LHR-GVA services, or that LH don't have some that they could spare.
This is a major hole in the Swiss network. Having said that, onward connections with LX via GVA are a mere shadow of what they were a few years back due to cutbacks at GVA. I used to transit GVA regularly, or go out via GVA and back via ZRH to places like Athens. Nowadays it seems that ZRH is increasingly the only option.
