The End Of The L-1011

In a few months, Delta Air Lines (which is possibly one of the few good airlines left in America, no offense) will be retiring its Lockheed L-1011s from their fleet, replaced by spanking new Boeing 767-400s and 777s. Lockheed built one great machine, but its potential was squandered with troubles at Rolls-Royce and the competition from the DC-10 and the 747 Classics.

Will the L-1011 have a legacy that could stand alongside the greats, such as the DC-3, the 707, the 747, and what do you think is the future of the remaining Tristars flying today?

They'll all end up flying for Tropical International Airways http://www.tropicalairways.com/. I don't get why those people are so obsessed about the L1011.

They will definitely be remembered as you described.. They were part of a very unique generation of planes... the TriJets... Delta's WideRide (tm)...

Actually, from what Ceilidh has said, Tropical will be starting operations not with former DL Tristars but with some older BWIA L1011-500s.

I think half of the Delta tristars will go to this new Caledonian Wings in Scotland.

Definitely a great aircraft. If you go to IND, you can see them everywhere. ATA always has a bunch at IND.

I see the tristars everyday (when the wind is from the east), flying right over my house (ATL) and have for over 15yrs. now. They have a distinct sound when flying over, sorta like the DC-8 super 70's have.

I never minded these giants climbing over my home, because even though they are early 70's tech. they are very quiet.

I still go out with my binoculars & try the spot the -500's vs the -1's. I guess not for much longer.

Air Transat here in Canada still have a couple of them left. I have to agree with the coment about it being quite. Even though it is from the 70's it is not like other older generation jets such as the 737's and Dc-9's
Air Transat flies L-1011' into yyt a couple of times but Today I actually saw my first A-330-200 in Air Transat colours. Looked really good. I wish that I had a chance to fly on air Canada's L-1011's. when I flew to B.C. the first time I was suppoused to get on one but there was an equipnment change!! I was not to impressed!! Oh well what can you do!

Tropical couldn't perform on their commitments, so they won't be getting any L1011s; and I hear that the UK Department of Transport has refused them route authority out of STN. Last I heard was that they were trying to lease a DC10 from Omni - but those guys also want money!

Actually, we're in the process of acquiring all 40 or so of the Delta L1011s plus six additional -200 freighters from the estate of Kitty Hawk International. We intend to return to service most of the Delta aircraft and all the KHI ones, so the total fleet would be in the mid/high 30s. The -250s would be used on the Scottish operations (Caledonian Wings) and the balance of the fleet will be leased out on an ACMI basis.

And all that's before we even start on the SuperStar programme!

The L1011 isn't dead yet ... not by a long way!

The Tristar was/is a great plane, but I don't know whether it is in the same ground breaking category as the DC 3, 707 and 747.

This plane I say was the best engineered for it's day, much more safer than the rival DC-10 with 4 hydraulic systems, each one being in a separate section of the aircraft with one-way shutoff valves in case of a leak. It has a slat locking system that the DC-10 lacks which is one of the reasons for the crash of AA 191 at O'Hare.
Too bad Lockheed did not have GE and P&W market their engines as options on the aircraft, would have sold many more to stay in production longer. Plus, the L-1011 would be the first wide-body jet I ever flew on.

Laserjet - the L1011 was indeed up there with such groundbreakers as the B707 - it was really the father of the modern, fly-by-wire systems we have today. Structurally, it's the best designed aircraft around - having effectively an unlimited life.

Thank goodness it never had the JT9 or CF6 - both of these engine types fitted to the DC10-10/30 are noisier and less fuel efficient than the RB211 - even than the -22B which isn't especially great!
