KLM's new CEO, Peter Hartman said some things in Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf about AF-KLM.

He said that the new group is experiencing much more synergy every day. However, he says that KLM is still a seperate airline within the group. "It isn't so that Air France picks our planes. You don't expect us to accept planes which didn't fit the KLM network" he said.

He ended with this interesting statement: "The name will remain KLM, blue will remain blue, that's my mission".

Hmm, wonder how this will be received within the group.

Cheers!  wave

I really love his quote from Luchtvaart Nieuws: “Maar de naam zal KLM blijven, blauw blijft blauw, dat is mijn missie.”

Best quote I could ever read. KLM deserves to keep their name and keep their colour!

Definitely, as one of the oldest (the oldest?) airlines they have a rich history.

I can't imagine why the French would want to change KLM's identity, I'm sure KL would lose many valuable Dutch customers, and the product and brand are fine as they are.

I like the blue livery too!  Smile

Three cheers for the CEO... KLM's planes are KLM's planes.. you can tell one the instant you see it.. there's NO reason to change that lovely, simple, clean livery from some euro white POS

I don't care what you think of my opinion. It's my opinion, so have a nice day :)

I don't believe that AF has ever said it wanted to change the KLM name or color. Everthing is working wonderfully, who would want to change that? I know one member of this board has been predicting dire things since the AF/KL merger but not one has ever happened. I'm sure the statement made by the new CEO is nothing new.

Joint purchasing is just one synergy, albeit an important one. AF and KL fleets do not differ that much either, I do not see any that AF may select which doesn´t fit KL´s network. My conservative understanding of the way business is done is that whoever owns the business and hands out the $$$ usually calls the shots.

Considering that the Air France-KLM group just picked-up Transavia as the brand for a new French low-cost, I don't think the group has any intention what so ever to abandon the KLM brand.

If AF brings the A380 to SFO and is discussed, I'll be happy to post A380 photos too.. Smile

"On 30 September 2003, Air France and KLM announced that they would in future be known as Air France-KLM. This entity was first offered on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange on 5 May 2004. The takeover of KLM by Air France marked the end of the oldest independent airline in the world. The Royal adjective will likely remain for the foreseeable future. Its independent identity is guaranteed to 2008, but eventually it is anticipated that its operations will be merged into those of the French company."

I just did some reading up on KLM. Didn't realize the history behind great airline. Now I am wishing Air France didn't buy them. My mom was born in Curacao, therefore I grew up hearing about KLM and ALM, just didnt realize it was such an iconic airline.

The name and colour definitely needs to be kept.

The day KL eliminates blue from itself i'll retire from aviation and never fly them again. LOL

But i'm glad that this new CEO actually insists on KL "independency" from Air France.

At present, AF/KL is testing the market on the strentgh and perception of their brands. I received some online survey from the Flying Blue programme full of questions on the KLM brand name, should it stay, should it not, why, etcetera. This doesnt mean that they will change the brand name but they are clearly trying to find out what the response would be..

I completely agree with the KLM CEO - as a frequent flyer with KLM myself I love it's identity and the colour scheme. It stands out and you know when it's around. There mere thought of it being lost in a big alliance is enough to make anyone shudder!

European nations tend to consider the flag carriers as a part of their cultural heritage. Although there are obvious synergies in the AF/KL merger, some may be afraid that a part of the dutch culture in the sky will disappear and will be replaced by a company with no real cultural identity. I have been several times on KLM planes and love KLM, but I also think that cash is cash and will decide on the future of the company or the brand.

Hope this helps, Stepph

If AF hadn't bought KLM then it probably be in pretty deep poo by now and possibly not far off going the same way as Swissair and Sabena. They were incurring heavy losses and had been spending most of the 1990s trying to find an alliance partner, project Alcazar, BA and Alitalia. AF might not be ideal but will keep the airline and it's people flying.
