As far as I know AA has flown DFW-PTY twice. I think there's a market and if AA is to offer direct connections to the DFW-NRT-DFW flights that AA would do fine.

AA operated DFW-PTY on a DFW-PTY-SJO routing back in the days of the 727-200. The primary purpose of the route was for DFW-SJO traffic - the PTY stop was due to performance limitations SJO->DFW.

Once the 757 was available, there was no need for the PTY stop and the route switched over to DFW-SJO.

Maybe it performed poorly because of the crew-friendly schedule and available (or non-available) conections @ DFW?

That or maybe AA focuses Latin America thorugh MIA, like CO does through IAH.

Possibly. Though there is virtually no local market and most PTY-USA traffic goes to the East Coast. That hurts it.

Very true. Most Dallas-LatAm flights exist for the sole purpose of diverting low-yielding, overflow traffic from Miami. DFW-GUA lives off connections to LA, DFW-SJO/LIR are holiday markets so they do fine, DFW-CCS performs very poorly, DFW-EZE yields are less than stellar compared to MIA/JFK, and DFW-SCL is profitable only thanks to cargo. DFW-GRU is the only Dallas-LatAm route that is a consistantly strong performer.

How do these DFW flights compare in loads to the IAH equivalents?

I have no idea, but considering that Houston is Continental's primary Latin American gateway and has significantly more traffic to the region, especially to Mexico, Venezuela, and Brazil, I am sure they do excepetionally better.
