I was on a flight from LHR-JFK last weekend and during the flight our Delta B767-300 was flying over the atlantic and I looked out the window to see a CO 752 flying literally parallel to us and only a few hundered feet away. Is this normal or what could another cause be? After a few seconds our plane started descending at a quicker rate then the CO aircraft and it went out of sight.

I have never had a close encounter in this regard, but I have seen a number of what I would call "close encounters" between aircraft over my home in Auburn, Washington.

It's always when aircraft are flying on intersecting flightpaths - departures to the south at SeaTac that turn east over Auburn, and arrivals coming westbound that turn north over Auburn. Aircraft frequently pass over one another at what to me appears to be a few hundred feet. My judgment may be skewed, but I can tell they are all 737/320/MD80 aircraft, and they appear to be identical in size.

If someone can explain the rules with these situations, that'd help me a lot (and probably the original poster as well.).

Thanks in advance,

-Dave

1,000' vertical separation is what you most likely saw, unless there was a screw up....1,000' of separation at altitude with 2 large airplanes looks quite close.

1,000' vertical unless visual separation is applied for IFR aircraft to pass over one another.

LHR-JFK / Delta B767-300

Am I the only one who sees a problem with this?

IFR would probably be the explanation, then, because there is zero chance that they are separated by 1000' at those times.
