I sell a lot of KE as being here in Chicago they have daily service and great connections to S.E. Asia with really competitive fares in Y and C. OZ is a an unknown commodity to me. It appears they rarely have daily service. When I was in ICN they appeared to be much smaller than KE. Anybody form Korea that can give us the 411 on the public attitude towards the carriers vis a vis service etc?

Well, KE is much stronger than OZ on long-haul, cargo and Korean domestic. However on short and medium-haul, OZ is somewhat compete-able to KE. Overall, OZ is a little bit smaller than half of KE in terms of almost everything, I guess.

I can see that Asiana is kind of a chaser of Korean air. OZ has been followed KE's a/c type more and more, so I think OZ will order A380 and 773ER soon. OZ follows KE on equipment upgrade too; AVOD, angled lie c class, etc. Therefore on service aspect, both airliners are too similar, except OZ is a little bit later - OZ sends craddle c class to ORD while KE does with new interior one with AVOD and new F/C class. So at this point, KE is better on service on ORD-ICN.

On milege point of view, OZ is far easier to gather milege since OZ is in the bigger alliance, star, and usually star alliance is more generous to give milege than skyteam. (It is purely Korean's view. LH, UA, SQ is easy to get mile on OZ's milege program, but AF, KL, NW is damn hard to do on KE's.) And OZ is doing more promotions on milege program; recently contracted with LG telecom (cell phone service like cingular) and customer can be given 10~17 miles per every 1000won(~$1). So it is really hard to get bonus seats on OZ than KE, really annoying. Anyway both airliners let customers to use milege very flexibly - always can cancel, reserve, move dates, etc. freely.

Lastly, from ORD, KE's schedule is better, I think. OZ is midnight departure.

Well, sorry that it was non-orgarnized compare. I always enjoyed KE and OZ, no preference yet. But they are expensive. From Korea, they were like $3~400 more expensive than UA/NW (Korea->USA). And surprisingly I found that KE/OZ are $300 more expensive than UA/NW in USA, too (USA->Korea). I really wonder how UA and NW makes money on such disadvantaged situation.

For some reason I saw a post saying Korean government is moving towards OZ/KE merger?

Really? I've never heard of that. Surprising since two airliners are better than monopoly stuff. I hope this is just a rumor..

Since both airlines have no government ownership, I find that highly unlikely! Absolutely no way that they would merge. Period. The only government involvement now is in the courts where KE is suing OZ over copyright infringement of its Flight Operation Manuals along with other things.
