Thomsonfly have today announced a 4 x weekly service between Cardiff and Barcelona, commencing in May!
Flights went on-sale today from £22.99 one-way, from the CWL website:
The new route reinforces Thomsonfly's position as the number one airline at Cardiff airport, flying more passengers than any other airline. Thomsonfly will offer seven low fares services from Cardiff next summer including Barcelona, Faro, Jersey, Alicante, Malaga, Palma and Ibiza, with prices starting from as little as £19.99 one way to Jersey, including taxes and charges.
Guy Stephenson, Thomsonfly's commercial director, comments: "We are very happy with the recent development of our services from Cardiff and we're pleased to expand our route network to meet demand in this increasingly dynamic and fast growing region. The introduction of flights between Cardiff and Barcelona is a very exciting milestone for both Cardiff and Thomsonfly: this is the first time a major new international route has been launched from Cardiff Airport with the support of the Welsh Assembly."
Guy added: "We are proud to offer consumers in Cardiff and across the whole of Wales the opportunity to fly to a wide variety of inspiring European destinations at affordable prices. Thomsonfly will continue to work closely with Cardiff Airport and the Welsh Assembly on opportunities for further route development."
Speaking about the new route Andrew Davies, Welsh Assembly Government Minister for Enterprise, Innovation and Networks said: "It is good news for Wales that Thomsonfly are expanding their services from Cardiff. The addition of new routes will provide improved business connectivity and new tourism opportunities and will help to improve the economic development of Wales as a whole."
Jon Horne, Managing Director, Cardiff International Airport added: "Linking Cardiff and Wales with the major cities of Europe is a key objective of Cardiff International Airport and so we are delighted at Thomsonfly's decision to commence services to Barcelona. This new service will, I am sure, build on the already significant success Thomsonfly has achieved at Cardiff and we look forward to working towards even greater success in the future."
Thomsonfly remains committed to providing a high level of customer service and offers allocated seating on all flights unlike the majority of low fares airlines, as well as providing passengers with the opportunity to pre-reserve seats and extra legroom. Thomsonfly offers customers a free and flexible baggage allowance totalling 25kg, of which up to 10kg can be hand luggage if desired.

Quoting AutoThrust (Reply 6): Sorry to say but you dont know Barcelona. Because if you would you would love it. Sure not everything is great there but still a lot better then most City's i've visited in Europe.
What planes do thomsonfly use? Good news anyway, Europe is getting always closer.
I live in Barcelona
Quoting Diesel1 (Reply 5): But FR don't fly to BCN do they - excellent prices to GRO and REU however....
Oh that´s terrible with the RENFE trains to BCN ...
Boeing 737's on their low-cost routes, as said, it's probably gonna be a B733.
Quoting Antdenatale (Reply 7): do you know if there are any more routes due to be announced?
Well within the last week or so we've seen RE announce Nantes, BE announce Belfast City, and now TOM with Barcelona! So things are looking good! I'm expecting more from Thomsonfly and FlyBE. in January, and possibly (dare I say it), a little more from bmiBaby too! Because let's be honest, WW need to buck themselves up or they're gonna start losing their base at CWL!
Thomson Airways - The UKs premier charter airline // now flown : BY -AA -AJ -AE -AT; OO -AX -AU -RA -BG; BRIG; OBYD

Great times ahead for Cardiff, I hope anyway! All we need now is a flight to JFK, I had to try to explain to someone today in New York that BRS or LHR were the only options unless they want to fly KLM via Amsterdam.

Good news for CWL and a useful addition to the network from there. Are TOM basing an extra B737 at CWL next summer or can the existing CWL aircraft operate BCN?
Also good to see TOM add a completely new destination, rather than just add frequencies and convert to scheduled status an existing charter route. Good as that is, it doesnt exactly add to an airport's route network

As it stands (at the moment) its confirmed 1x733, 1x762 (as cardiffairtaxi says swaps with 752 in aug for remainder of season) and 763 (premium a/c) here for 5 days, doing CUN, SFB and numerous short haul flights, however there will be a 733 popping in occasionally on W patterns from elsewhere (MAN based i think)
Cant see TOM announcing any more routes for next year. 46 flights a wk on offer.
