I had a good discussion this afternoon with a 777 SV captain , about fleet renewal at SV.
He told me , SV will buy BOTH A350 and 787 , as they wish to be more European oriented. He didn't tell me how many frames of each type.
In the meantime they will lease A330s (200 or 300 ?) , as already mentionned in Airliners.net.
After this order , the next step will be to find a successor to the MD90.He honestly said , he has no infos about the type to be chosen.
In another way , he also confirmed , only 1 A300-600 is still in service , as the others are stored awaiting their fate.
Take all these infos as you wish , as they are only classified inthe "rumour chapter".
One thing is sure , SV will probably place a huge order next year.

I forsee a long and prosperous future ahead of them plying the trade winds carrying christmas goodies and business packages.

I seriously doubt SV would go for the A350. IMO Airbus pitched the size just wrong for a carrier like SV. They don't need a 772 replacement, they want a smaller plane (like the 788), and a larger plane (like the 773ER).
Regarding the A300s, they might go to a package freighter, but bear in mind they are some of the oldest A300-600s around.

Somehow, I think SV would be very offended at any Christmas present!!
This order will be very political; I am sure the French (no doubt the Germans too) took great offence at the decision of SV to order McDD and Boeing aircraft, only, in the early 1990s - particularly as France participated in the first Gulf War. Saudi Arabia naturally wants to keep well in with the Europeans.
I think 787s would certainly be a good choice, but perhaps 320s as an MD90 replacement? Of course, the 787 and A350 are not mutually exclusive. The 787-3/8 would do as an A300 replacement and when the A350-900/1000 finally enter service, the eldest SV 777s will be around 18 years old - not to mention the 747 Classics, if they're even flying then. Of course, it would make more sense, commercially, to order 787-9/10s, but that's where the politics comes in.

Although I love the MD-90, I think it was bad idea on SV choosing the MD90's in the first place, several years ago. They probably would have been better off ordering 737NG's to replace their old 732's.
They must have gotten a deal on the MD-90/MD-11F combo.

From what I heard, most are withdrawn from service. A combination of ERJ's and MD90's replaced the local AB3 routes. I know for a fact that the L1011's are stored in Taif (sad sight).
