UK Air Passenger Duty - Pay Extra At Check-in?!

Can someone in the know explain what is happening with the UK Air Passenger Tax increase which comes into effect from 1 February 2007. Apparently people who had booked to fly after this date but before the annoucement was made by the Chancellor last week will still have to pay the increased rate of tax, even though the booking has been made. Hence airport check in will be asking for the difference in payment! I've booked and paid to fly to New York in February and hence i'd be looking at an extra £40 (am i correct?) Are all the airlines going to demand payment at check in, as it will cause chaos!

I hope not. Its unfair on people who didn't know at the time that this was going to happen. I've got a flight booked from LHR-EDI on the 10th of Feb. I would say that I will start using the sleeper train more often now from Scotland to London but then train tickets are going up too. I though we were meant to be encouraged to use public transport??

If you are flying business class is GBP40 but economy is GBP20. I don’t think it would be that dramatic at the airport but I guess they should have waived to people who had purchased tickets already

I would imagine that airlines will try to contact anyone who has already fully paid for their flights, to ask for the extra in advance.

Any tickets/holidays where the full amount has yet to be paid will show the increased duty on the final demand for payment.

If anyone reaches check in without having paid the extra duty, it will be a case of go out of the line to customer service to pay the extra duty before you can check in.

Our thieving chancellor suggested in a meeting yesterday that the arlines should bear the cost of the increase, where passengers have already paid for their tickets. If the man had one grain of common decency, he would have waived the increase on any existing tickets.

Does that tax apply to transit passengers as well? I am using BA 2 or 3 times a year on long distance. If it does, I will switch to AF/KL and I am sure that there will be more people doing the same.

If there was a title for research on cleaner fuels, you have proof that the new tax is just addtional revenue.

Provided that your journey originates outside the UK and ends outside the UK, tax (or Air Passenger Duty "APD" as it is referred to in the legislation) will not apply.

Connecting flights

Different criteria govern whether the second or subsequent flight on a journey may be treated as connected, depending on whether that flight is to a domestic or international destination. These rules can be found in section 4.

I'd be all for some form of green tax only if it sped up the process of researching new green fuels to power our car's and homes. This is what needs to be done but is it really being done!!?

I'm sure there will be a new door tax, where I open the door on my house and Mr Brown takes £5!

The latest is that a report says the Chancellor actually overruled his Civil servants and decided that you will pay. He said that just because you have paid in full for a ticket bad luck and also he expected the airlines/ tour operators to pay instead!! He obviously has not an ounce of integrity so as was said above make sure you remember this when the votes happen. He is not using this for any other purpose than getting money for the government to spend badly! In addition he seems oblivious of the financial problem that he has made for the airports and airlines...

I have worked for a council for about 18 months, before I started this job I was working private sector, I had an impression that the councils and goverment in general squandered so much money. Now that I work for a council I know it was the correct impression to have.

I have tickets to fly from MAN-LHR-SYD and return in MArch. How much tax am I going to have to pay. Do I have to pay to leave MAN and LHR or will I pay just once. The goverment really ***** me off when they do things like this and then say tough luck, we changed the rules without bothering weather it will affect anyone. Brown will not get my vote and I hope they lose the next election.
