VN One Step Closer To Starting U.S. Service

Posted (7 years 7 months 2 weeks 3 days 17 hours ago) and read 3130 times:

According to this news source, VN would like to start service to the U.S. by 2007. Since 2007 is only a couple of weeks out, I assume they mean in 2007. My bet is on SFO or LAX.

You are correct on both points. VN won't have the equipment to fly to the States nonstop until they get their B787s. From VN's perspective, the best place to stop enroute would be China. I have doubt they could get the permissions from the Chinese.

Did Vietnam Airlines get rid of their 777-200ERs?
Range: 7700nm.

VN currently runs SGN-CDG, about 800nm less than SFO

Hanoi-San Francisco is 6360nm. WELL WITHIN the 777-200ER range.

But for the sake of argument,
they could do like airlines used to do and go through Anchorage....cuts down the longest leg to 4700nm.

China is out.
Tokyo is out.
Maybe Osaka or Nagoya.
Seoul.

BUT again, why would they have to?????

Am I missing something?

It'll be SFO IMO. Didn't they have their huge press conference at SFO when they bought the Triple-7? SFO is my bet.

Severe headwinds going westbound. Also, HAN-SFO is not a very plausible route. The economically viable route is SGN-SFO.

On good days, a B777-200ER could make it. On windy days, it would have to make a tech stop, probably at TPE.
