Engine Selection For The A320 Family

What types of performance/cost differences do the CFM56 and V2500 engines offer the A320? I am interested in understanding why a new Airbus customer like US Airways goes out and buys so many A320 family aircraft all fitted with CFMs.

The CFM56 is popular in North America, with the exception of America West, Mexicana, and United. The V2500 seems to be a more advanced engine; however, does it suffer from reliability problems? What is the dispatch reliability of CFM-powered Airbuses compares with those powered by the V2500?

Also, does anyone have any word-of-mouth reports of how pleased airlines are with their engine selections. I thought it was interesting that British Airways ordered its new A319s with V2500 power.

The V2500 burns less fuel, hence its selection by some airlines. The CFM56 was, if I remember right, the only choice for awhile, so alot of airlines would already have had it, and any additional aircraft would have been purchased with the same options. Also, I think the use of the CFM56 family on 737's and A340s in different variants as well as the A319's helps out with some certain spare parts stock, and maintenance questions. Also, over the life of the engine a CFM56 lasts longer and is cheaper to maintain, thereby offsetting some of the fuel economy and purchase price advantages of the V2500. Still, a good choice for one operator or fleet may not be the right one for another operator, so both engines have a market on A320 family aircraft.

Are you sure US Airways has chosen CFM engines? I think they chose the V2500...Wolf was first critisized for not going American (737NGs) and he said: I have chosen a "World" aircraft: European airframe with mainly American engines...

Various points:

1.)USAirways chose CFM's for their 319's and 320's

2) NWA uses CFM's. When the orders were placed, NWA ordered 340's, since cancelled. NWA was to have taken the V2500's, and the 340 was to use the uprated V2500 "Super Fan". When IAE cancelled this, NWA ordered CFM's for 319/320 and 340, for commonality? NWA was usually a Pratt customer until this (P&W 33% of IAE).

3) LH and All Nipon chose CFM's for 319/320, but V2500 for A321 instead

4) I think that airlines, choose the best pricing, or other items of value, such as power by the hour. On the other hand, USAirways uses CFM's ond 737-300/400, so there is commonality.
