I have recently flown from London (LHR) to Zurich (ZRH) on BA and they lost all but one of our bags. Or at least they said that they were simply delayed but that was 5 days ago. these cases contained many objects near and dear to us. BA are now telling us that they are no longer trying to clear the "backlog of bags at heathrow" but concentrating on clearing current bags. As far as i am concerned this means that we may never see these bags again. I was wondering if anyone knew how much BA is responsible for (considering this is almost entirely their fault as, at their own admittance, the bags never left LHR - but are possibly lost) in monetary forms, not only for the value of the goods but surely they must be responsible for us having to live in the same clothes for 5 days not to mention lack of certain essentials. We are insured but I feel that we shouldn#t have to face raised premiums for something that isn't our fault!

The baggage problem has affected all airlines operating out of Terminal 4. The existing problem has been futher exarcerbated by fog at Heathrow today causing flights to be cancelled.
There is an excellent chance that you will be reunited with your bags, however I can't possibly say what exact time frame this will be in.

Bags are rarely lost. Mine went missing after a MAN-LHR-PHL flight in August when they were still having problems following the security scare. It turned up 12 days later. Use the baggage tracer on www.ba.com and phone them every few days to check on progress. There is a notice on ba.com regarding the baggage problems of 17 Dec (look in ask ba) which says they will consider compensation on a case by case basis (no pun intended I'm sure) with advice on where to submit claims.
Can you not claim on your travel insurance?
Chris

British Airways are the worst airline that i have come across as far as dealing with lost baggage, My route was DTW-LHR with BA, They cancelled the flight as the aircraft had a fuel leak in Houston ( Aircraft was in Houston as the route goes IAH-DTW-LHR ) So i was transferred to Northwest Airlines, DTW-LGW, I asked the check in staff will my bags be guaranteed to make the flight as that was my main worry, She said "They Will I will Get Them There Now" I thought thats good, After arriving at Gatwick my bags were lost, They were still in Detroit, The British Airways staff at LGW were useless, They just gave my a form to fill out and that was it, No apology or anything, I came home made some calls and they said they should of given me a reference number at LGW for my bags, They didn't, I did finally get my bags though.

One of our students went home to Saudi Arabia and on his return his bags went AWOL at LHR.. over 6 weeks ago now. Somewhere between the inbound SV flight and the outbound shuttle they've disappeared. He's rather less than happy, especially at having to spend ages on the phone to BA just waiting for someone to answer at the other end.

I didn't get any compensation from the airline with any letter, Think its too late to do anything now i have been here 3 weeks now, The worst part of the flight was they didn't even supply me with a meal.... They asked if my ticket was with British Airways or Northwest Airlines, i said British Airways, they said they will get back to me, I waited 45 mins thinking this was reasonable and they started collecting the meals, I stopped a flight attendant and said have the BA passengers received a meal yet, They said nope they will be with you shortly, I sat there and waited even longer and the lights dimmed, I got confused, I didn't see any other F/A's walking so i went to the galley and said, I'm a transferred BA passenger and i haven't been given a meal yet, They said i'm sorry sir there isn't anything i can do about it, That's it.. They didn't say anything else, I was tired and just went and sat down hungry, Any idea why they said they couldn't help me? However i did get the breakfast snack!! YAY, Don't know who to blame, BA or NWA.

Every year my family travels with BA to go to the States from Doha. And on each segment, they have to loose a minimum of one bag, sometimes half of our bags get lost! It always happen with BA and maybe its just our bad luck, but every time our baggage arrives one day to one week later!
It never happens to us using a different airline. Maybe its something to do with how crowded LHR can get.

I've never had this on BA, but bmibaby lost my case in June and in never reappeared. "Compensation" was an insulting £200, which took ages to be issued and the cheque was printed with the wrong name so I could not cash it. I believe £200 is an industry standard when you don't have receipts for each and every item in your case. Looks like you may have to give your insurance company a call.

A lot of the baggage problems over the last couple of days was to do with the baggage belt between T4 and T1 breaking down. This caused a massive backlog of bags at LHR.

If you have travel insurance you should be able to claim through that although I dont know if the bag has to be officially lost.
Last time I dealt with baggage, a few years now, the official lost date was 42days after the baggage was reported lost.

Sorry to not be more helpful, but avoid BA and Hell-HR at all costs if you don't wanna run into those nightmares... especially during those busy around-christmas days...
