AF A340's/777's

Air France operates both 777-200's and A340-300's. These aircraft have near identical capacities, and identical range. I know that AF bought a large number of A340's when they were govt. owned (don't start an A vs. B war), and then they placed an order for 777's a few years later. My question is, what makes them choose an A340 over a 777 or vice-versa?

I think AF bought A340 was just because Airbus is alo French.

But it's interesting that they didn't bought A340-500/600, instead, they bought 10 B777-300ER in early October.

Air France uses the B777 on its high capacity routes where the A340 is not bigh enough. Remember the B777 can carry some more pax then the A340... They are not completely complementary...

I know that AF ordered the 777-200ER as a 747-100 and 200 combi replacement, and the -300ERs they ordered are a 742 replacement. To replace the A310 and 763 they have ordered the A332.

Agree with SNPilot: 340-200/300 are a not so similar to 777s.
777-200 seem to replace the old 747 classic: I guess AF had a "777 Best Of Menu" obtaining a nice price on the 777-300s. Adding 777s orders roughly equals 747 classics that have to be retired.
777 are carying more pax than the 340s, and also have more high yield passengers seats.

And I don't think 340-600s would be available as early as 777-300 ! These latter will be quite close...

Too bad that AF doesn't order the 346 ...
Anyway wait and see how the A3XX will be fitted !
