I was out at YVR today and saw a Saudi Kingdom 747 near the Air Canada hangar. Does anyone why it is here?

If it was the Kingdom Holding company B747-400, it is there to finalize the Hotel chain that they purchased with Bill Gates few weeks ago.
It is H.R.H Prince Alwaleed bin Talal company who owns this aircraft and it is his personal aircraft. It is one of the best VIP configuration aircrafts in the world.

some times it is good to have your own 744 (*L^)

Saudi 747s (SPs at that) have shown up at SEA several times this year as well. Anybody have any info as to why the royal family has suddenly taken so much of an interest in the Pacific Northwest?

Maybe SV is close to placing an order for the 747-8I to replace their older 747s?

While it's entirely possible we'll see that order materialize someday, I seriously doubt that's the reason for the recent visits. From what I've seen, the Saudi jets have popped up at some other unusual airports in the U.S. recently as well, so I'm more inclined to think that the royal fam is taking in the sights or some shopping with their extra oil money.

It's refreshing to know that the $50 I pay every week or so for a tank of gas is indeed going to a good cause.

You can check out some photos of the aircraft here.

I believe some of the royal family members attend schools in Vancouver. few years back we would see 4 LD3's of baggage as cargo to Riyadh and PAris for members of the Royal Family who spent the summer in Vancouver.

Or maybe checking on the private ride they might be trading up to? Remember there are four UFO 748i BBJs on Boeing's orders page.

If 747-8 production was underway, I'd say that was a possibility. I seriously doubt the recent visits have had anything to do with a business relationship with Boeing.

I would not be surprised if either Peince Waleed or the Royals are the future owners of one of a few of the B748i BBJs!! They got the dough for it.

nothing to do with boeing and he didn't order a new 748i,his personal jet is new he got his 744 for almost nothing, he is very smart, if you read the his book you will know that even in buying his personal things he fight for the price.

he is in Vancouver for skiing with his family (Khalid "his son" Reem "his daughter) you can see their names on the aircraft.

There are rumours that he's placed or is in the process of placing the first (Private) order for an A380. Isn't a 744 large enough? I know he found the A343 too small, and the 767 too, but this is really going a bit too far, isn't it?

Get your camera's dusted off - rumour on the street is she is leaving at 3pm Sunday afternoon (Dec 31st). Of course, they may want one last ski run or pop into the new Tiffany's on the way through so this may change, but this was what was being said when i left work about 6 hours ago.

he is not that stupid to order a new 748i, he is fine with the 744, he sold the A342 for profit (and this is from his private secretary), and by that amount he bought the 767 (which also sold for somebody in Las Vegas for profit too) and then decided to buy the Ex. China Airlines 744, and got an excellent discount in making it a palace in the air.

Actually he had the 767 & the A342 at the same time. They used to fly into NCE tandem. The joke was that the A342 was for him & his family and the 767 was for the luggage.  Smile

Good that he sold the A342. It used to be owned by the sultan of Brunei and had a hideous interior.

Re: the A380, the rumour was that a (German or US) design company had been asked to put together a proposal for fitting an A380 in VIP interior. This was over ayear ago, so I don't know where it went from then...

There was this reply in a previous thread.....

Quoting UAEflyer (Reply 34):

"Saudi Arabia:- The king have his own 747-300, and his crown-prince 747SP. When i met an Airbus official in Dubai Airshow, he told me that there was a serious negotiations with the former king (who passed away), but stopped since his death, and the new king didn't continue."

Speaking of whom reminds me of this speculation from that previous thread.....

"Maybe we should set our sights farther East, as only the Sultan remains unaccounted for - and who was rumoured to be strongly interested in the A380 'Flying Palace'."

Minor correction. It's not ex-China Airlines (CI/Taiwan) but ex-Air China (CA/People's Republic).

by the time he was using the 767 the A342 wasn't flying for him anymore, it was taken by the new customer to Hamburg.

The 767 never was a luggage airplane, it was his preferred aircraft, you can see that in the DVD with his book, which is written by Riz Khan.

I am surprised if the A342 was already sold. We are talking about the same plane, HZ-WBT4 CN 151 ? This, according to airfleets.com has been finally sold to Afriqiyah Airways in Nov 2006.

The 767, HZ-WTB3 (and later HZ-WBT6) CN 27255/525 was in operation at the same time. I can swear I saw both the A340 and the 767 parked side by side in NCE.

The bit about the 767 being a luggage plane was a joke...  Wink
