Quoting A340roy (Thread starter): was taking my flight to madrid on the 24th dec evening at 1640 hrs, and while waiting at the gate, i was amazed to see a BA B747-400 taxi past for the active rwy. this was at around 1550 hrs.
BA were trying clear the backlog of passengers due to the fog which reduced the number of flights LHR could handle hence some short haul flights were cancelled.
I think JFK777 was just saying is a coincidence that at vacation time there are problemas for BA, in the summer the problems, and this holidays the terrible fog in LHR.
About the 747 in FRA, as they said in other post, is just to take all the passengers that had delays in LHR, in stead of sending 4 or 5 Airbus A320 full.

As you will see on other threads the 747-400 also went to Madrid a few times and a 777 went to CPH and GVA, all to disperse passengers from cancelled flights. And I imagine to get rid of the mountain of bags that were at LHR as well!!!
I think for these sorts of things no one sits in first class and club europe passengers get put in Club world. Must be a nice surprise to get a long haul seat on a short haul route!

Having read the replies above, I think it might have to do with the fog dealys at LHR... correct me if I'm wrong.

Why would they leave any seats empty on that kind of flight? my personal guesses are that it's either on a first come, first serve basis as per check-in time or based on passengers' frequent flier status.

There was a big deal about BA using its biggest long haul aircraft on some of its shortest routes, Does this mean that some long haul flights were stitched to maybe the 767? ... I don't know how many spares BA have to deal with something like this.
