Qantas 707 - VH-XBA - What Next? (2 Pics)

I drove to Domestic T3 in Syd this morning at 6.30am, and on my return home VH-XBA had been moved from Hangar 416 (where she's resided since arriving before Christmas), and was parked against the fence bordering Airport Drive.

I had my camera, but there was no way I could stop - all "No Stopping" on that part of the road. She looked fantastic, but I am wondering if there are any Qantas ground crew on here who might know anything about about when - or where she is scheduled to go ? Some talk has been that she will do a few "visits" before her final last journey to Longreach?

I have checked with the Qantas Memorial Foundation Website, but there has only been one update since the XBA arrived. On an earlier thread someone mentioned they were going onto the Jetbase to take pics - but I don't think we ever got to see the results.

I have heard there has been some form of "embargo" on the a/c while in SYD. Apparently there was a documentary film crew on board during the ferry from Southend UK, so perhaps there is going to be some form of doco - or tv special?

Sam Chui provided some photos to the website of the hangar welcome - but other than that there is little to see apart from on A.net and the "other" site.

Come on Aussie people...... help us out pleeeeease?

Yeah - and it ran out of steam !

I revived it - and will probably get the big "D" from the mods because nobody has bothered, and all they worry about is "matching words' on the data base.

What is wrong with Aussie ???............ this is something SPECIAL, and nobody seems to give a bugger?

I'm a Kiwi - and to me it is a very significant event. I realise that things have been quiet, but perhaps for promotional purposes, thats the way it has to be. Be fortunate that you had these a/c flying in Australia! We didn't have much of an option around that time in NZ - (Electras, then DC-8's).

Ok Mods......... dump the thread (I had to go back 3 pages even to find it! thats how OLD it is!!!!)

Absolutely beautiful bird - classic style - I only wish I had the opportunity to fly on a 707 before their demise (although I did fly on some KC135s of the USAF back in '86)

That would be me KiwiTEAL... I have a few exclusive photos of the bird which I am happy to forward to you...
Hopefully if I have time tomorrow I will head out and take a few more snap shots of the bird before she heads onto her tour of Australia.

The aircraft is placed in a spot where you can see it alright as you drive past, but cannot get a clear photo. You can't just walk up to the fences anymore in SYD and take your photos, especially where the 707 is parked, as the fence that is nearest to the aircraft is on the QF jet base.

She has moved once since being parked in it's present position, that was to a run up bay last week, but I don't know if they actually started her up.

Nobody really knows as to when and indeed where it's next flight is. There is talk the government wants them to do a tour of the country, as they put cash in they probably want some publicity out of it. There is also the talk that CASA have told them that the airworthy cerificate issued to them, only allows for one more flight and that is to Longreach.

So in other words, there has been little info about it, simply because nobody has a bloody clue and I doubt QF, the Founders Museum and anybody else really has a clue. You can rest assured that as soon as someone gets the inside info, they will spill it.

Personally I reckon she will depart SYD on January 26th (Australia Day) do a circuit of Sydney Harbour, do a low fly-by over Canberra, then head up to Longreach. That way the government and QF will get national publicity and CASA will get there way as she will only perform one more flight.

The plane has only been insured and certified for 25 cycles, its used a few of at SEN and a few on flights back to oz so it can do a few more flights before it has to be hangered.

Well unless they apply for certification again.

avalon is pushing for it to be displayed there, the federal govt is also making noises for this bird to do a capital cities tour of Australia. rightly so if you ask me, the plane is part of Australia's heritage not just Sydney & Longreach.

I understand it will be visiting Brisbane Airport before going onto Longreach.

Does anyone have any info as to when it will be coming here to BNE? I'm interested in seeing it there.

Hey A.Netter's...
Sadly I wasnt able to get those snap shots I promised I would get today... As I got to the Qantas Jetbase, a Qantas tug was towing her away to I believe a remote area / hangar due to the thunderstormed which has moved in this evening... I have promised snap shots of VH-XBA and I will stick to that promise...
Once again I have got exclusive snap shots of VH-XBA departing Southend on her ferry flight and never before seen photos of the crew which carried out the ferry flight of this beauty and bringing her back to home soil where she belongs... I am more than happy to e-mail these snap shots to anyone who is interested (I wont be posting these snap shots on the site)... Cheers!

Zkpilot,

Yes mate I know where you took those photos from, I drive past there 20 times a day. It's not like in the past though when you could casually park in the QF staff car park there, pull you ladder out, walk up to the fence, take your shots and casually walk away, totally in view of security etc, and have no hassles at all. I do notice the window reflection on your shots, I assume you were in a crew bus ??

She is back in her corner now, just teasing us as per usual.

Does have another old QF aircraft next to her at the moment, N2767, I believe is an exQF 767-238.

yeah go the good old days...
reflection? hmmm that would be telling  Wink
pity all that equipment was in the way tho...
to be honest I don't really see what security has an issue with in regards to this...they aren't military aircraft... its not like terrorists can do anything with a camera. What it comes down to is security don't like having people hanging about next to the airport boundary fence making nuisances of themselves

Got an email today from the 707news@qofm newsgroup indicating that a limited capital city tour was firming up as the likely option prior delivery to Longreach. The email also indicated ongoing maintenance as confirmed above was being undertaken and further engine runs on the ground had been conducted. It also indicated that it must get to Longreach soon simply because some components were on loan and needed to be returned in the short term. No city, date or other details were provided. My assumption from this is that departure of VH-XBA from SYD to who knows where next would be sooner rather than later given the activity that is taking place.

Just a silly little question....if you look at the very first pic of the 707 in the hangar, the registration on the tail "VH-KBA" seems to be written in mirror effect....any reason for that .... ?

The rego. VH-XBA is for flying perposes only and once in her final resting place up in Longreach the aircraft will wear her original rego. VH-EBA...
