I just made an appointment to get a Third Class Certificate in order to start training for my Private Pilot's license at KSU. What I am wondering is whether I should go ahead with this, or just go for my First Class right up front. I don't think I am in any danger of not being able to get a First Class.

Get your first class... The exam is basically identical, just with different limitations on each thing... Either way every medical I've gotten has been nothing short of "Is everything ok?" "yes" "ok here you go" (of course with the usual eye, heartrate, etc tests)

It's good to know if you're able to have a first class in case you wish to pursue flying for a living
