New/updated Economy Seats For US Legacy Airlines

Delta is currently the only US legacy airline to feature leather seats in economy class, although it is not yet available on all aircraft. However, these are not new seats, but are refurbished from the old seats. In addition to new seat covers, they have new paneling installed. For example, Delta's older 757s, many of which featured ash trays, had their ash trays removed. Could other airlines soon follow? Yes, I know US Airways has leather seats on a few America West aircraft.

Delta has the nice thing about leather seats, however, most of their aircraft do not feature adjustable headrests. In fact, the only aircraft in Delta's fleet that feature headrests are the 767-400s, 777-200s, and the newest 767-300ERs. Continental, United, and American have them fleet-wide, except on American's 757s. Some have stated that the seat refurbishing currently being done on Delta is only a temporary solution, and that after Delta exits bankruptcy, new seats will be installed. NW and US Airways could also get an update as well.

What are your thoughts on this?

Leather or cloth really doesnt matter to me... I primarily fly CO, US and B6 and all 3 seats have good/bad factors about them. I'd have to say, though, of the three, US is the worst and CO is the best. B6's leather is abit more "cushy" but I prefer the winged headrests of CO. I wish CO would put the winged headrests into the ERJs (or convince expressjet to do it) the way Eagle has done.

Same here. What I want is proper lumbar support, controls that work, and adjustable headrests.

The 25 new US Airways E-190s, which start revenue service in the next month or 2, have 88 Leather seats in Coach and 11 in First Class.

Before 9/11, AA planned to replace all Economy seats in their entire fleet. When choosing a new seat, they considered a leather seat but determined that it was not the best option in their case. They opted instead for a more expensive upholstered seat with a 6-way adjustable leather headrest, because they thought that is what passengers would value the most. These seats were manufactured by Recaro and designed to be slim so that passengers have more leg-room with the same seat pitch. They put them on the new 737 and 777 aircraft and then on the MD-80 and 727 aircraft. AA’s seat turned out to be a very good choice and is extremely popular with the passengers, consistently being given as one of the best points about AA’s Economy product in passenger surveys.
However, after 9/11, they could not afford to carry on replacing seats. Only a few 767’s were done and the rest had the existing seats re-furbished with new panelling and adjustable headrests, to look similar to the new seats. The 757 and A300 seats never got upgraded at all and simply got new dark blue seat coverings instead of the old light blue covers. If AA ever decides to upgrade these seats, I would expect them to use the same seats as already on the M80/737/777 rather than a new leather seat.

Yep, and the B757 seats are a bloody disgrace, especially for someone like me who has to sit on them during 6-hour transcons... Incidentally, some A300s, but not all, have had their seats upgraded but not to the B737/MadDog standard (maybe, they used the old seats, and just changed the fabric and added headrests?). They are, however, an improvement over the non-upgraded ones.

I agree, I like the new AA seats very much and find them very comfortable. But, the inconsistency (on some planes you get great seats, on some others you can totally crap seats) is driving me crazy!!!

Can I ask what the obession with leather seats are on this board? Cloth seats breathe better and can be just as comfortable if the only difference is the seat cover.

Yes, 10 of the A300 aircraft have newer seats than the rest of the fleet. These aircraft had the seats fitted for transatlantic services from JFK and BOS. They were actually new seats (not refurbished) but are different from the Recaro seats in the M80/737/777. I think these A300 seats were manufactured by BE Aerospace and although they do have leather headrests, they are not like the adjustable ones on other fleet types. Aircraft 065-074 are the ones with the newer seats.

I agree that the 757 seats really need to be upgraded soon. AA chose not to upgrade the 757 and A300 because they are primarily allocated to lower yielding leisure and VFR markets. While this may be the case with the A300, the 757 does actually fly many other non-leisure routes such as BOS/EWR-LAX where the current seats are not really adequate. I think they will have to upgrade them soon because lots of passengers have expressed dissatisfaction with the current seats and AA really does listen to passenger feedback (though it may not always seem like it!). Also, the old seats require more maintenance repairs to fix broken recline/fallen off cushions/seat backs etc. so soon it may make economic sense to replace them, particularly in the older 757’s. However, officially, there are no plans to do so just yet.

Hadn't AA actually fitted some A300s with PTVs for transatlantic services? I don't think they are the same seats as the "new" ones they have now... or am I imagining things?

Yes, the A300’s had PTV’s when the aircraft were flying transatlantic routes. However, these were removed, along with the entertainment system, when AA re-allocated the aircraft to their current duties. It was too much weight to leave these systems in, and there was no real need for PTV’s on the shorter flights. Also, AA wanted a standard A300 fleet, with no sub-fleets of different aircraft. As far as I know, the seats themselves are the same, just had the PTV’s removed and the gap panelled over.

The A300 has Economy seats of a different width to the 727 (A300’s are almost an inch wider) so the 727 seats would not be ideal for this aircraft. Additionally, it would have meant a lot of work to change the seats from sets of 3 (727 has a 3:3 configuration) to sets of 2 and 4 for the A300’s 2:4:2 configuration.
The 757 has exactly the same cabin width, seat width and 3:3 layout as the 757 so they could easily have swapped the seats. However, it is possible that they used the new 727 seats to upgrade the ex-TWA MD-80’s instead.

Totally agree. I personally don't like leather seats. They are often slippery and you can find yourself almost sliding off the seat. The only reason most carriers use leather is to reduce maintenance costs. They cost more initially but need much less maintenance since you can just wipe them off. They also tend to feel either hot or cold, depending on the cabin temperature.
