EasyJets LTN-CDG V Eurostar - Will It Survive?

I travelled into London St Pancras rail terminus today, which is going to be the new high speed London rail terminal for Eurostar trains travelling to/from Paris and Brussels.

I live in Wellingborough (Northamptonshire) on the Midland Mainline express train services to London and we called at Luton Airport Parway on the way into London and the train service took only 22 minutes to get into London from Luton...

My question is... With First Capital Connect and Midland Mainline offering such good connections to London and onwards connections to Eurostar from next year. Will easyJet be able to maintain a high frequency 5-6 times daily service between Luton and Paris?

With many of Luton Airports main market living along the corridor of this rail route, the obvious and easiest option to get to Paris will be Eurostar from next year. Unlike AF or BA, easyJet do not carry connecting passengers, so cannot be reliannt on this market.

Even though I love air travel, I feel I would use the Eurostar service to Paris if I need to travel there. As if I travel to Luton Airport by train I need to carry luggage up and down stairs at LTN Parkway station, be subjected to 10-15 min bus transfer to the terminal and then have to check-in 1-2 hrs before departure. When Eurostar check-in is 30-40mins before departure and will be no stairs to negotiate at St Pancras.

You forgot only one little detail, price. The budget traveler will always choose the cheaper alternative. However, the business travelers (and I have no idea how many fly U2 now) might migrate to Eurostar.

If business travelers will indeed switch to Eurostar (what I expect them to do), I see easyJet depolying it's aircraft on other routes.

I think the new express Eurostar will impact on LTN-CDG services by EZY, at LGW we don't have any CDG or ORY flights at all any more, I understand the reason for that can't be laid exclusively at the door of Eurostar competition, BA services from LHR and other factors play a part but no doubt in my mind if there was no Eurostar LGW could and probably would support a service to CDG/ORY but with London and Ashford offering services to Paris on the train it has had an impact and I believe it will do on the LTN services.

I don't think we will see an end to LTN-CDG, there will always be budget conscious passengers who can book early and live near LTN and will use EZY to Paris or people who just prefer to fly but the higher yielding passengers are the ones EZY are most likely to lose to the Eurostar I think and thus amplifying the impact of the competion.

Perhaps down to double daily in the end, one early AM and one late PM?

Are you sure of that?
I've flown EZY once between CDG and Luton :
- Train ride from LTN to Euston took me around 50 minutes.
- Train tickets are really expensive.
- If you want to have a good deal with EZY, including nice schedule, you have to book well in advance.At the ame time, you also have very good leisure deals on Eurostar.

In my opinion, if you do not have a connection at LHR with BA, the best solution to go to London remains Eurostar.

Midland Mainline serves London St Pancras and First Capital Connect serve Kings Cross Thameslink station, not Euston. That does still take roughly 50 minutes. The fare is quite expensive at £12 return though.

I think there will always be a market for Easyjet here as people always have different preferences. There will always be a significant number of people who will want to travel by air. The service might be downgraded but it won't get the chop.

Im not surprised it will take 50 minutes on a First Capital Connect commuter service train stopping at all intermediate stations between Luton and London. Also depends on what station you travel from/to in London.

As Midland Mainline (MML) is a long distance intercty train company all of Midland Mainline trains that service LTN Parkway run non-stop to/from London St. Pancras. On their timetable the scheduled journey is only 22mins too.

However MML trains only call at the station once or twice an hour where First Capital Connect operate anything up to ten trains an hour, but a number of these trains are also fast limited stopping services to London.
