My one political reply, I promise.
Gerald R. Ford was a great man who served his country above and beyond the call of duty. His pardoning of Richard Nixon cost him a second term as President, but in the long run, it healed the country.
In my opinion, he was one of the last Presidents to be a forward thinker, and certainly one of the last people to think of the needs of the country before his own political career.
History is proving to be very kind to this great man. His personal sacrifice to the United States deserves to be remembered. Rest in peace, Mr. President.
Now, back to aviation - I was unable to get up to Rancho Mirage/Palm Desert to pay my respects, but at least the services were quite well carried by the media. And the Presidential 747 has the look befitting our Chief Of State - it looked magnificent against the mountains surrounding the Coachella Valley. It is altogether fitting that Mr. Ford be given the final honor of being carried around the United States in that plane.

Quoting Web (Reply 5): Came in to GRR at about 1450 EST. Throngs of people (including myself) were all around the airport just to catch a glimpse of this beauty. Here it is coming in on final for 26L:
Great Picture. I would love to head over to Grand Rapids to pay my respects to this wonderful man, but I know it is so busy, I think I will wait for a couple of weeks to head over, pay respects to him and look around the Presidential Museum.
RIP Gerald OUR. Ford

By Action News
January 2, 2007
The Air Force 747 carrying the body of President Ford roared low over Ann Arbor Tuesday afternoon en route to Grand Rapids. The jet, part of the White House presidential fleet, appeared to fly over Michigan Stadium and rock its wings in a brief appearance beneath the clouds.
