Minor Colision At JFK T1

With the size of the corridor between Delta and T1 incidents like this are bound to happen. I guess underpaid ramp workers dosent help either.

I don't think the rampers had anything to do with this. I think the Air China plane was under its own power when it hit the tail of the Delta aircraft.

It clearly says the Air China plane was pushing back. Unless 747 powerbacks are now the norm, the plane was under the rampers control.

The flight to CDG had not boarded yet when this incident took place but there were 209 passengers scheduled to fly on that now damaged aircraft. A spare aircraft was used instead.

Sorry. For some reason I assumed it was CDG even though I read the article. That's what I get for speed reading. You are right though. It was FLT 82 to NCE with 208 passengers.

I just came off of DL 82 last night. The damaged aircraft was Ship 1606 (N16065) - a shame since it was recently refurbished with the improved BusinessElite seats and AVOD PTVs. Scheduled departure was at 6:10pm and at 5:30pm we were told to move from Gate 26 to Gate 11 (which is a non-jetbridge gate, requiring the use of PlaneMates or People Movers). Our flight was switched to Ship 184 (N184DN - unrefurbished 763ER) which had come in from ATL earlier and was supposed to RON (remain over night).
I like how the article simply says we were put on another aircraft one hour later - not quite the truth, I'm afraid. We started boarding the first Plane Mate at about 6:40pm but didn't end up boarding the aircraft until 7:20pm (ship 184 had to be prepped with the bags, meals, etc., as well as a thorough security check since it was an international flight). Many pax. didn't find out about the incident until the Captain mentioned it in his pre-flight announcement.

We finally pushed at about 8:15pm while wheels up was at 8:44pm. Block time was 8 hours 40 minutes; estimated flying time for last night was 7 hours but thanks to some really, really strong tail winds and some great work by the cockpit crew, we managed a flight time of 6 hours 39 minutes and touched down in NCE at 9:23am (only 33 minutes later than the scheduled arrival time of 8:50am despite a 2 hour 34 minutes departure delay - imagine how early we would have landed in NCE if there hadn't been an incident). Flight was full except for 1 empty Y seat.

Overall, great work by the pilots in chopping another 20 minutes off the planned flight time.

Unrelated, but what I do know is that I have never seen such a busy international terminal (T1) with so little ramp space to operate in. The north-side area all tow in gates with no room to taxi and some with weird configurations and on the south-side facing DL, lets just say it's amazing these things dont happen there on a weekly basis.

I worked at T1 for a brief time last year ( I actually worked for the airline responsible for CA operations), and boy when "rush hour" would come around we would have widebodies all over the place. The terminal is obviously to small for the amount of traffic it receives, the terminal one group rampers dont help all that much either. Its just a bad situation all together.

An interesting side note T1 should be the first terminal at JFK to see both the 380 and the 748

Well, they did this time. From the way that the two planes were oriented, there's no way that the Air China plane was under its own power. It looked as if it happened while the pushback crew was turning the Air China plane to line up with the alleyway centerline (a task they obviously screwed up).

The wing of the CA 744 clipped the tail of the DL 763. In any case, nobody was on the DL plane yet anyway...

That alleyway (between T1 and T2) is one of the most congested during the evening rush hour. I have flown out of T2's Gate 26 many times and the delay in pushback is usually interminable. All the widebodies going into T1's Gates 4 and 6 need to be towed in and during that time, we have an LH 343, an OA 343, a JL 744 (on some days), a TK 343, an LH 744 all either arriving or departing within the 6-7:30pm hour...

I would say alot. the people wing walking and pushing back the aircraft were likely being paid less then 9 dollars an hour. Acidents like this one are preventiable, but the airlines get what they pay for.

Has nobody realised that an 'empty' aircraft might still have pilots, cabin crew and cleaners on board (as in 'empty' of passengers)?????? It is fairly conceivable that someone may have been injured (I'd imagine an aircraft being hit by another aircraft would be jolted, so people could be knocked over if they were standing or walking on the aircraft).

Think outside the box guys and gals, please...

I saw a CA 747-400 Combi taking off from 13R ahead of my jetBlue flight this afternoon. Could this have been the A/C in question? I can't recall the tail number, but I know that it was a 747-400 Combi.
