I was talking to a friend of mine who took a trip to Sri Lanka, and for the last leg, he flew on Airlanka (It was from Bahrain). He said that there is a 90% chance Airlanka will lose your baggage. He said his dad on several occasions saw his baggage just lying out there on the tarmac as the plane was pushing back, and he had to plead with the F/A's to stop the plane so he could get his baggage. Is this true, the 90% figure, that is?

This might be true, but it has logical explanation to it. I flew Sri Lankan Airways (as it is now called), last January from CMB to SIN. Prior to the flight boarding, it is mandatory, for passengers to step on to the tarmac and identify their baggages due to safety reasons.

It happened at Singapore when flying to Colombo too and numerous other times as well. The reason behind this is, that there has been a civil war in Lanka for the last 20 years and in 1987, a bag which apparently carried a bomb inside, detonated inside the plane itself, when it was being prepared for departure, killing 12 people on ground and also severly damaging a L1011 Air Lanka tristar.

Since then, great care has been taken on every UL flight. Maybe, your friend's dad didn't declare his baggage was his, and since no one declared it. They left it behind, for safety reasons.

Sri Lankan Airways has improved a great deal since Emirates took a 40% stake in it. With new aircaraft (A330) and ambitious expansion plan, I would recommend Sri Lankan Airways to anyone.

But that doesn't explain why they just pushed back without loading his luggage.
