DL 117 Via Bangor Twice In A Row?

Delta 117 runs Stuttgart-Atlanta with a 767-300. Yesterday on the 7th it 'tech-stopped' (apparently) in Bangor, Maine. Today, FlightAware has this flight doing the same thing.

Anyone know what's up?

Jetstream winds and crappy weather along the east coast (generating higher amounts of arrival fuel (for holding, alternates, etc.) that cuts into payload would be my guess...

I think I've read on here before that STR has a shorter runway, so flights have a restricted take-off weight. The 763ER very easily has the range to do this route, but the short runway combined with stonger headwinds and bad weather likely is forcing the fuel stop.

Not sure about DL117 specifically but today's headwinds over the North Atlantic have been extremely strong - witness the number of CO 757 westbound flights making fuel stops. DL99 BUD-JFK, for example, usually with a block time of 9:30 today has an in-flight time of about 10:15 - it left BUD about 30 minutes late but is estimated to arrive JFK about 80-90 minutes behind schedule....ditto for practically all airlines' transatlantic westbounds today....

The nonstop DL 17 BOM-JFK 777 today has also diverted to BOS...

I'm actually impressed it made it that far! That diversion could have had more to do with the nasty weather here today than the headwinds, or perhaps it was a little of both.

Not a shorter runway, but a few rather large mountains in the take-off path that requires specific take-off procedures that costs the 763ER some range. Normally, that is not much of an issue, but when you have such strong headwinds, you have a problem. Overall, DL117 is infamous for fuel stops in Bangor.

These flights just get more fuel & go, correct? There's no chance for 'Heidi' to chit-chat with passengers while the plane is in BGR, is there?

Too bad, since they know there will be a fuel stop at BGR before they even leave, that they can't pass immigration & customs there instead of in ATL. BGR is equipped to do that, so why can't they help the passengers out with a benefit like that?

DHS procedures require all passengers to clear US immigration at their first point of entry. Exceptions are few and far between, and usually are granted to 'regular' tech stops like the sterile stop in ANC for flights from JFK to Asia.

So I'm sure that any diversions to BGR require all passengers to deplane and go through customs there. That is why a lot of non-US carriers divert to places in Atlantic Canada instead.

looks like on the 2nd and the 5th it diverted to BOS.

Im guessing i can expect an early arrival on my ATL-MUC flight thursday thanks to some tail winds, though i doubt my 777 FRA-ATL will need a tech stop on the 16th, glad i didnt pick the STR return!

I have been on a DL flight from Europe refueling in Bangor, and nobody left the plane. In fact, we didn't even get to a gate, just stopped further away on tarmac to get the fuel. The whole thing was over in about 30 minutes.

Only if the passengers are told to get off the plane and the remaining flight is cancelled. Generally for short diversions such as a medical emergency or a fuel stop, or even temporary weather diversions, passengers have to remain on the plane and no one goes through customs/immigration. I've been diverted to BDL while summer thunderstorms temporarily shut JFK down - we all had to remain on the plane as they assumed that JFK would reopen later and we would continue on to JFK. Last winter, my ZRH-JFK flight was diverted to BGR but we were told to remain on the plane and await word. Finally, when it looked like JFK would be closed for the night, we were diverted to DFW and it was only then that we had to go through immigration and customs as we had to spend the night in DFW....

You were supposed to go to JFK but diverted to DFW instead? That must have made people REAL upset!  hissyfit

AA figured it was best for the aircraft and the connecting passengers to be at home base...there were connecting passengers whose final destination was not JFK anyway so AA figured they could just as easily connect out of DFW (though by the time we landed after the 3.5 hour flight from BGR, there were no more DFW domestic flights that night anyway...)..."Only" those of us who had JFK as a final destination were inconvenienced  Sad
