I have just received an email from Virgin Atlantic in which they are promoting the new Premium Economy cabin and offering 50% flying clubs. But just look at what got my attention!
Why is the bmi logo and tail displayed on official VS marketing? Could this mean something? Don't VS need BD's permission to display their logo?
I know VS and BD have had an arrangement regarding mileage on FF accounts for a long time now, and that is mentioned on the email. VS also have an agreement with Eurostar, also mentioned on the email but their logo and corporate identity is not displayed. Could this mean something? Or am I reading too much into something which is insignificant.

Without BMI, VS would be a British only airline with almost no feed traffic (Unless they flew BA to the UK).
Without VS BMI would be a regional british and european airline with no long haul.
As 1 merged airline, they would be too serious a competitor to BA that government intervention could happen.. as most of the government privately own BA shares and protect their personal interests.
so as they are... there's better.
Personally I think VS should take a dump or get off the toilet when it comes to Star Alliance. They partner with almost every star carrier but dont join the party.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

BMI, VS wont happen easily, and it would mean the loss of BMI name. And I think LH are more likely to snap up BMI and sort BD out, cos to be blunt, if they keep going like they are they are fucked.

Exactly... LH is sitting on the option for a BD buyout at an already agreed price... basically if BD went down the toilet tomorrow, LH can be forced to buy bmi for a certain figure.. basically the LHR slots.
Which means at some point BMI will become LH-UK guarenteed, it's a matter of when. At that point your BD miles lose 50% of their value, gold status goes purely to CEO's and you need 100K a year for gold and the airfare doubles.

What BMI name?
BMI lost its identity six years ago when the British Midland name went!
BMI need VS and vice versa. It is a logical match - VS long haul combined with BD short haul and like others have said it's a huge competitor to BA, especially outside of London where BMI and the Regional arm are important players. It would also give VS a low cost arm if they kept WW, which would be an area VS are already a part of in the Australasia region, and trying to get into in the US.
I hope they merge and we have a super-sized VS flying all around the UK - they could then truly be "Britain's Flag Carrier"!
