Quoting Asgeirs (Thread starter): Tonight, an emergency slide on the outside of an Icelandair Boeing 757 deployed while the aircraft was on final for Kastrup airport, Copenhagen.
The jet landed safely and no injuries occurred. It will be inspected at Kastrup but a replacement aircraft was to be ferried in to pick up the passengers that were waiting for the return flight back to Keflavik, Iceland with a 4-5 hour delay.
Does someone at or near CPH by any change now which aircraft was involved in the incident.
Rgds,
Asgeir

On August 11, 2002, about 1920 eastern daylight time, a Boeing 747-256, Spanish registration EC-DNP, operated by Iberia Airlines as flight 6250, sustained a number 2 engine fire during the initial climb after takeoff and performed an emergency landing, with a subsequent evacuation, at the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Jamaica, New York. Four flight crewmembers, 12 flight attendants and 333 passengers were not injured. One flight attendant and 34 passengers sustained minor injuries and 2 passengers were seriously injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and an instrument flight rules flight plan was filed for the flight destined for Madrid, Spain. The scheduled international passenger flight was conducted under 14 CFR Part 129.
The flight crew reported that shortly after takeoff, when the airplane was climbing between 1,300 and 1,500 feet, the number 2 engine fire warning light illuminated. The crew discharged both number 2 engine fire extinguisher bottles; however, the light remained illuminated. The flight crew declared an emergency, and performed an emergency landing on runway 13R. After landing, the flight crew initiated an emergency evacuation and intended to utilize the five evacuation slides on the airplane's right side.

Quite incredible what happened in the video, I hope that if it was a more serious situation he pax would have put getting out alive as a higher priority!

It would appear that the passengers didn't realise the seriousness of the situation, and that they were carrying out an evacuation. There were no verbal instructions from the cabin crew, and no crew rushing to get people out at all. I thought it was very poor that the crew didn't seem to be of any use whatsoever in this crucial part of the job. The scene just looked like mass confusion. If anything, it looked like the passengers thought they were connected to airstairs or something.
The only verbal instruction was an American passenger shouting for people to get out - and don't forget that it's a Spanish aircraft so many of the pax wouldn't understand English!
If anything though, this video shows the benefit of pax videotaping takeoff/landing etc, as in the event of something like this happening it can be used as an example to improve things in future.

This shows you why everyone should pay attention to the F/A perflight briefing. And everyone should read the card in the seat pocket in front of them. It states right in their to Leave you careons on the plane.
But, we all know how well everyone pays attention.

This is a really bad job by the IB cabin crew. Allowing pax to go on the emergency slides with their carry-on luggage. Incredible.
As I read in the other thread the emergency slides at the back of the plane did not deploy, forcing everyone to make use of the exits near the wings (i.e. near where the fire was).
I haven't been too fond of IB but after seeing this I highly doubt I'll ever fly them at all, knowing that the average Spanish passenger seems to care more about his belongings than the life of others or even their own.
People filming during emergencies often get flamed here but I'm glad we get to see what it is REALLY like when things go wrong.

Off course they should go directly to the exits without grabbing their luggage.
But not only passengers do this ,also crew do it, I clearly remember a DC10 from FEDEX smoking and burning like a torch standing on the tarmac while the crew was evacuating true the cockpit windows with a rope but not after they got out all their bags and other personal belongings.
BTW I'm pretty sure there is a video somwhere about it on youtube but I'm too lazy to link it.

Makes you wonder about some of the video recordings we "never" get to see

Well if these guys did not listen to their "own" briefing, what are the chances of the passengers in the back! (Yes I know it's a freighter).
Smoke bags pouring out then some crew then more smoke and bags........... Finally the rest of the crew, amazing footage!

And what would you do? Stop the evacuation and tell them to please leave their hand luggage on board or you are not going to allow them out of the aircraft? Grab it from their hands and place it, where?? Grab it from their hands and throw it out of the door to the slide or on top of a passenger on the floor?
Once the passengers have done the stupid decision of taking their hand luggage with them, there is no way of changing the situation without seriously delaying the evacuation.

It's interesting (to me at least) that everyone has quite rightly criticised pax for taking their baggage , but no-one has commented on the person who obviously is just standing around with his/her video camera filming the evacuation - this is at least as stupid as the other pax - the only think anyone should be concentrating on in an emergency evacuation is getting out of the a/c

My thoughts exactly. Thankfully nothing happened, but the person filming was obviously not concentrated in what should be the priority, which is to get out!
That alarm-like sound you hear inside the aircraft, is that a normal evacuation alarm used on all commercial planes?

What part of "Drop everything and get the hell out!" don't they get????
Stupid, yes, but I think it's human nature - everyone is protective of their personal belongings. How many times do you see/hear of people being injured in house fires because they were trying to grab as much stuff as possible?
Still, that's a pretty eerie video. As stupid as the filmer may have been, it was something that I'm glad I saw. Rest assured, I'd elbow, punch, kick, bite and then climb over every single one of you if it meant evacuating a burning aircraft!

Quoting Mayhem (Reply 14): How many bags did that fedex crew have,
Hey, I think I saw one of the crew members grab the LL Bean pullover fleece that I ordered online and had shipped via FedEx!!! WTF?!
What's even more amazing is the fact that so many people (crew and guy with the camera) were willing to stand that close to a fuel-laden aircraft that is on fire!
I think its pretty safe to say the pilots had their logbooks in their bags, and I bet their logbook is more valuable than the Porsche in their garage at home.
Heck, I only got 120hrs logged, but sure as hell I'm not gonna leave it to burn anywhere!
A bit more important, I would say, than the duffle bag Mr. John Q Public has full of his underwear...

Judging from the change in the smoke color, I would guess that ARFF is there somewhere. It makes me wonder what tactics they used on this event.

Actually, different carriers have different procedures.
Some airlines instruct cabin crew to take the bags away from the pax and to dump them into the galley. This can present a serious tripping hazard, and if done in the front of the aircraft, may obstruct the pilot door.
Other carriers instruct cabin crew to snatch the bag away, and them to throw it OUTSIDE the aircraft. The rationale is that the pax will go after it, but this does present a risk of hitting people outside.
Finally, some carriers just have the passengers keep their luggage as they go down the slide, the rationale being that it's not worth fighting with them and thus delaying the evacuation.
Quoting EZEIZA (Reply 16): That alarm-like sound you hear inside the aircraft, is that a normal evacuation alarm used on all commercial planes?
Not all aircraft have it. On most B737s it is not installed. Instead, another evacuation signal may have to be used (like the PA announcement "E-Z", "Easy Victor" or "Evacuate") Also, cabin crew are usually taught to turn off the alarm as soon as it is activated as it is considered a distraction to the evacuation effort.
VAMOS! VAMOS! VAMOS! Hehe that was cute but assertive. Other carriers that speak English usually do something like this:
RELEASE YOUR SEATBELT AND GET OUT!
LEAVE EVERYTHING!
COME THIS WAY, FORM TWO LINES!
YOU AND YOU, STAY AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SLIDE, HELP PEOPLE OFF!
YOU, SEND THEM AWAY!
JUMP! JUMP! JUMP! MOVE AWAY!
Release your seat-belts and get out! Leave everything!

thanks for posting.
It truly amazed me as well!
I was a volunteer firefighter for over 25 years and a lot of the training I had I still use and pass on to family and friends.
When boarding a aircraft how many people do you see take note of where the other exits are (not the on that was used in boarding) I count seat backs by feel heading to my seat. look around and then count back to the rear of the aircraft as well. Yes I even look at the safety card, and listen to the demo. You just never know do you?
Hotel rooms and concert halls the same way, map out any possible escape routes before hand. Also make sure you have an alternate means of getting out. Three o'clock in the morning, with smoke and darkness surrounding you is not a good time to figure out which door leads to the stairs!
Pre plans work and save lives.
25 AnnInFL: You would only say "FORM TWO LINES" on a dual pax slide. Most companies in the US say GET OUT. A regular passenger would not know what EASY VICTOR mea
26 MarkHKG: That is precisely why some carriers used it over the PA. To avoid passenger panic. Do they have science to back that up? Nooo... Variations I have he
27 AnnInFL: GET UP GET OUT is pretty common in the USA. Some airlines do use RELEASE SEATBELT others OPEN SEATBELT... I don't know of any airline in the US that u
