Since starting service to the "First State" this summer, how has Delta been doing with it? I drive past the airport every day and never see any advertising or anything to state that they even offer service. It seem odd, as they are the only scheduled carrier out of the airport. If I were DL, I would certainly advertise as the city of Wilmington is a 10-15 minute drive, and there is potential. If give the opportunity, I would rather fly from Wilmington, DE than drive to PHL.

I have taken the flight a couple of times as a non-rev. Plenty of seats both times, including one evening where half the flights to PHL were cancelled due to weather and ATC - I figured it would fill up with people being rerouted but we left with at least 20 open seats. I rented a car from Avis for $30 one way to PHL and made the drive in about 20 minutes. It's a shame they don't market it more, since I have told a lot of people about it and they are surprised to hear there's even an airport in Wilmington!

That's very interesting. I believe the old Allegheny had fiights out of Wilmington on a regular basis for quite a while. One possibility is that people (particularly business travelers) would rather put up with the complexity of PHL and ride a 757 to ATL than a 2+ hour CRJ flight out of ILG.

I'll be flying ATL-ILG on February 9 (along with my wife and 8mo son). I really think that even though people know about the flights, they are so married to US and the wide range of direct flights throughout the country from PHL that they would rather just fly from PHL. US has operated from Wilmington on a contract basis for Dupont in the past (IIRC, flights to Richmond, VA and Morgantown, WV but don't quote me on that). I talked to the counter agent when they had ops out of ILG and she told me that in fact, the counter was used for future ticketing by northern Delawareans more than people who flew out of ILG as it was easier to go there than to schlep out to PHL.

The only reason I would fly out of Wilmington (if I still lived there) on a regular basis would be if I had to fly to a destination in the south (GA, TN, AL, maybe FL), it was overall cheaper than a flight from PHL (parking cost, etc), and if the overall flight time were less than a flight from PHL. It makes little sense to fly anywhere international (save maybe a destination in the Caribbean ONLY if it were heavily discounted). I hope this flight sticks around but if loads are light, it makes no sense to continue it.

EA and UA also flew into ILG, as recently as 1986, when UA pulled out. They flew IAD-RIC-ILG and IAD-ILG with 72S.
