According to an article in Luchtvaartnieuws Mexicana is currently negotiating with Airbus and Boeing to purchase 40 new aircraft. Mexicana intends to spend US$2 billion on these aircraft and the aircraft would be added to their fleet in the next 3 years. It is not mentioned which models are being considered and how many of them are NB's or WB's.

I guess this is the same future order as reported earlier in August?:
http://www.airliners.net/discussions...general_aviation/read.main/2959723
At that time it was reported that MX only asked Airbus for a proposal. 14 firm and 26 options all leased.

Nothing official, but sounds like the order could come anytime.

If the flight attendant union does not sign the new contract that will save MX US$25 million each year they will not purchase the 40 new aircraft. MX released the news to put pressure on ASSA to sign the deal, since 40 new aircraft will mean more jobs... lets see if MX gets to sign with FA's!

$2bn for 40 aircraft would suggest they're all single-aisle. MX currently operates a fleet of around 60 A318/19/20. IMHO, they are very unlikely to order 737s.

Old news so exciting!!! Crespo announced this some months ago, but they expected to get to an arrangement with all FA's union but that was a little bit delayed and once again they're heating the water and see if this time they get what they want from the FA's. The order is for 14 A32Xs plus 26 options of the same type. This match the January 2nd 2006 order in Airbus spreadsheet which marks 09 A320s and 05 A321s. Deliveries will most probably start taking effect this year!!! An official announcement MUST be made SOON!!!

So if this is correct, where will the A321's fly to? Maybe they will not be based out of MEX but rather out of CUN or GDL? Any info?

I was hoping the order would include some widebodies too... at least two or three  Sad

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

I really hope its correct Eddie, as still marked as "undisclosed customer" on Airbus.com but that has to be MX order because it match the number of frames Crespo announced last year and the last info i was told before!!! It's like Avolar's B737-800WL's order, Boeing has a 20 B738 order on December 20th, 2006 still marked as an unidetified customer, but lets hope we soon get to know something on both orders for Mexico. At least, with this new order and options, MX will be able to boost its fleet to 100 frames by 2010. MX too have chances of getting brand new Airbuses from other sources, remember AC from March 07 and so on will get rid of over 35 A332/343/345s. That might be a good source for MX to lease frames.. and more over.. lease them cheap.. the A343s leases are going down!!! SQ is another disposing away their A343s. The B777/787 is winning the race.

I think we all are hoping for the order to include a couple of widebodies Eddie. I would like to see MX getting a few double-isle aircraft, maybe then they will finally land in Europe.

I guess that makes me three. I do believe MX will place a widebody order (whether it be small or large) sometime this year.

Indeed, there will be a lot of frames available, just in case.

GDL or CUN, but even MTY could be an option if the mid-term plans come to realize.

So if this is correct, where will the A321's fly to?

LAX, CUN, ORD, some destinations that need capacity, and not necesarily have to be from MEX

I read some time ago that they were talking with Airbus about some A346. Seems a little too large for them, but you never know. They might get some smaller planes as an interim lease to build up a long-range network.

Thank you for that clarification. I am unfamiliar with the airline! And reading that post of yours definitely makes a 737 order very unlikely.

DAYflyer, Mexicana for a while, had a diverse fleet. 757s, 727s, single-isle Airbuses, and Fokker 100s. 727s are gone, Fokkers went to its LCC division (Click, such as UAL-TED)), 757s are also leaving, which leaves the airline with Airbuses and a couple of 767s for their Argentinian service. Their website has just been upgraded if you want to take a look at it, I think MX has the best website of any Mexican airline.

cheers

Indeed. First, MX had an all 727 fleet. Then they added DC-10-15s. Then came the F100s. At some point MX decided to go all-Airbus for short and medium haul, so they retired the DC-10s and started replacing the 727s with A319s and A320s. When the F100s were transferred to QA (fka Aerocaribe, now Click by Mexicana), the A318 was introduced. The last 727 flew in 2003 I think. Now the only non-Airbus planes in the fleet are 2 ex-LB 763ERs for the MEX-EZE-MEX service as Juventus explained.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Its appearance is cool, but there's room for operational improvement. I find AM's website to be more user-friendly and efficient, albeit not as nice-looking as MX's.

Quoting NAVEGA (Reply 21):

They flew (together with AM) DC10-15s, for which both airlines were launch customers. The short-lived DC10-15 was a hot & high upgrade of the DC10-10 Transcontinental.

Wishful thinking. The FAs have already offered a US$14M productivity package that MX management has refused to take. They want the full enchilada, and ASSA doesn't seem ready to accept. I beleive there will be a compromise in the end which will allow to get some new frames... Not 40, but perhaps 14 to 20.
