A380 Certification - Why No Deliveries?!

May be this is an all-too-easy questions but...

...now that the A380 received its type certification by the EASA and the FAA - why doesn't Airbus speed-up the delivery schedule right now?! Any problems should be resolved with the type certification... not?!

A380 production has been bogged down with technical issues that have halted assembly. The delivery schedule is now 18-24 months late and SQ will hopefully receive their first A388 by Q4 2007.

My understanding is that the type has been certified but Airbus does not yet have a production certificate. i.e. they haven't proven that they can build the type as certified.

That's not enough. They essentially had several flyable airframes that had no interior fittings, and either jury-rigged (for cert testing) or incorrect wiring. Those now have to be completed as per the recently finished schematics, and then the interiors need to be fitted.

They have just announced that they have solved the wiring issues with the aircraft. The first SQ aircraft is now havng its cabin fit done.

Airbus are quite rightly in my opinion not changing delivery estimates just yet.

There appears now to be a little slack in the program which should absorb any more minor hiccups that may occur.

"Solving this wiring issues" in this case means that they have identified a correct wiring layout. It does not mean that the solution has been applied to all of the airframes in question. It means producing new parts and fitting them to aircraft, and then completing the aircraft.

Everyone needs to be careful to understand that this does not mean that EADs suddenly has several finished A380s on the flightline that could be delivered tomorrow.

Haven't the recent wiring problems been solved. Should see it in singapore livery by october at the very latest, I would predict.

...sure, since I was not aware the wiring problems did NOT affect any type certification-related items. That's it.  Wink

Anway, it appears a bit strange that they have not been able to solve the problems with interior/in-flight entertainment wiring earlier... and that these problems did really affect the delivery schedule and, in fact, the whole program!

It was far more than the IFE wiring. It was wiring for the whole airframe.

Proving you can design an aircraft that can and will meet regulations gets you a type certificate. Proving you can design a production system that will do it repeatedly with no unresolved mistakes... much harder. And there's the rub. Having all those wiring issues proves that your configuration management and change management processes are not good enough to gain a production cert. Getting one aircraft rewired is just the start... proving you can repeat it, reliably not just doing it for the rest of the airplanes is the part that takes diligent effort. No regulatory agency is going to certify the A380 production system until Airbus proves they have corrected the process not just the design and proved it over and over again.
