No official press release yet but an item in this morning's Atlanta Journal-Constitution claims FL will start ATL to STL on May 8th and seasonal ATL to SAN on May 24th.

I have some friends in STL so this is great news for me. I'll be using FL a lot MSY-ATL-STL. Also very nice to see SAN. I'd imagine the svc will go year-round eventually, as will SEA.

Nice to finally see concrete news of AirTran's long-expected arrival at SAN. I'm somewhat surprised though that the SAN service is being announced as being seasonal. It will be interesting to see if Delta responds by announcing an increase in its service to SAN from ATL.

FL used to serve BNA via GPT way back in the day. Of course it didn't last long, and was done at the request of the Beau Rivage. I think ATL-BNA would perform well though.

Now if Leonard and crew would only add ATL/BWI-SYR (maybe MCO, too) so I could use them when I go home instead of having to drive all the way from Rochester. They added DAB on this end, so why not make it even easier for me?  Wink

Will these be run with new a/c, or will there be corresponding schedule deletions elsewhere in the system? Or neither?

Airtrans planes are all new. 737-700 will be used 717 doesn't have the range. avg. age of 737 is about 1 1/2 years.

Morning Lindy'. I was going to post exactly the same thoughts that you did. Seasonal? SAN-ATL? Come on AirTran; if you're going to serve SAN, then please be serious about it!

I really doubt that they are going to all the trouble of setting up shop at Lindbergh only to shut it down in October... I see 2 realistic alternatives: either they will start other routes (e.g., IND, STL, MCO) before they "temporarily" stop the ATL flights or they will quickly change their minds about "seasonal" (after perhaps noting that DL kind of flys it year-round!) and more likely ADD flights to the route in the Fall.

My mind is already trying to place FL at SAN - counter space and a gate. My guess is T1, West End (between AS and UA, where F9/YX used to be) and using gate 19? (Otherwise, squeezed in T2 East near AA and gate 30-something.)

In any case, let the 2007 growth begin! Welcome to San Diego, AirTran.

Seasonal service to a city with no seasons?

That doesn't make any sense.

And completely ignoring the fact that San Diego is business destination probably more than it is a leisure one.

You'd think that being the, what is it?, the 2nd, 3rd largest city in California would mean something......

Unless, this is a veiled way of saying they are *testing* the market.

Having re-thought this, I'm kinda' partial to the idea that FL just might want to slide in and cuddle up right next to YX's new ticket counter in T2...

One other thought: Delta now has extra incentive to keep those big beautiful 767s flying the SAN-ATL route as often as possible this year, especially after May 24!  Smile

Yeah - when FL announced PHX, Delta doubled their seatcount for PHX-ATL... I'd look for a bolus of 763s just like we got here  Wink

Plus cruise ship season is during the winter months from Sept to May. SAN is definitely as year round destination. I hope SANFan is right in establishing IND and MCO non-stops from SAN in the future as well. I noticed no RON's, so gate space will obviously be shared with someone.

I'm still hoping for FL to announce SAT sometime this year. An as yet unnamed airline just requested two gates at SAT (Gates 8 & 9) and I was thinking it was either US or FL. Time will tell I guess.

Hi '990, I knew you'd be here.

You're right (of course); we're seeing these non-prefered times for FL just as we have from AC, YX and B6 (altho I think it's voluntary in the case of Blue) and I'm really curious to see where they end up gate-wise. I would expect FL would have loved a morning departure from SD as one of their flights...

On the other hand, at least we have 2 (SEASONAL!) flights for inaugural service rather than just 1. Unfortunately, the AirTran folks seem to be under the impression, as are so many other people on the planet (including some right here on A.net), that in October, the citizens of San Diego shutter up the windows, pull in the sidewalks and leave town in order to avoid the horrible winter weather soon to arrive! (Especially the military and cruise lines!) There's just nothing going on in the nation's 7th largest city between Fall and Spring -- it's just a ghost town here...  hissyfit
