Quoting Oly720man (Thread starter): Don't know how often this happens (no photos in the db), but in place of the timetabled A340, today's flight is an A330.
The first time I realized this was on Jan 17th. Both TK flights to JFK and ORD were on 332s. Couple of possible reasons:
-It is cold and lower loads, top and bottom, making it possible for 332 to make these flights. Summers, another story.
-7x343s in TK fleet are up for interior refurbish. This could be the perfect time to do this, before the busy summer schedule.

On Wednesdays Turkish sends an A330-200 to JFK, the rest of the week the flights are on the A340-300.

I didn't realize that. How long this has been the case? And do you know how far into summer this might continue? I am interested because then I will have to fly on Wednesdays.
Thanks.

Do you know what Altitude he was at when you snapped him? Is Barton in the UK?
I'd love to get my hands on a telephoto lens to throw on my 300D

Actually, I just looked at the TK website, today, Wed., TK001 is operated on 343.

Yes, Barton's near Manchester in the UK. Altitude, I'd hazard a guess at FL360.
A calculation.... The aircraft is 250pix long out of 3072 pix in the full image. The 400mm lens has a horizontal angle of 6deg so the resolved angle is 0.488 deg.
With the 1.6x scaling factor in the digital camera, this resolved angle is 0.488/1.6 deg = 0.35deg
Length of an A330-200 is 58.8m
For a right angle triangle, the short length will be 29.4m (half the aircraft length) and the angle 0.1525 deg (half the resolved angle). This gives a distance of 11045m, i.e. 36239ft. The aircraft wasn't directly above me, so this distance will be marginally less, but FL360 is probably about right.

THY has been trying to maximize availability of its new premium product on the US routes. Works out well now during the winter sending the A330 while loads are down anyhow, and frees the first A340s to be modified with the new cabins.
Enjoy your trip. Hopefully you'll get lucky with one the new A330s!

Since sometime in December the A330-200 has been operating in on Wednesdays but I am thinking the A330-200 used on the IST-JFK route instead went to ORD today. The schedule shows TK2 should be an A330-200 today.

Actually most Weds & Friday since early November.
The ORD A330 trips are new, with the 332 operating 8 of the last 10 flights.
