I received this email today from Varig in regards to future alliance.
As a SMILES member, you can take advantages of the largest Latin America’s loyalty program flying VARIG and enjoying the benefits and exclusive privileges.
Now, with 19 domestic and international destinations, the new VARIG is looking for a stronger presence in its international network, and will decide new alliance partnership as soon as that Viação Aérea Rio-Grandense S.A (“old” VARIG) will cease its participation at STAR ALLIANCE on January 31, 2007.
Therefore, starting on February 01st, 2007 some privileges will be no longer available, such as VARIG mileage accrual and awards redemption on STAR ALLIANCE airlines flights, and further services associated to STAR GOLD and STAR SILVER categories.
The most important: your miles will continue to be accrued and redeemed on VARIG and its partners flights, in which all of your benefits are granted.
Frequent international traveler interested in keeping the STAR GOLD and STAR SILVER benefits, please visit www.staralliance.com for an exclusive offer from Star Alliance Members.
Your loyalty with VARIG raises the value of Silver, Gold and Diamond.

Alliance wise? Right now no where.
Quote: "In order to deliver the Star Alliance benefits, products and services to customers around the globe on a consistent basis, our member carriers work to certain standards and processes. Unfortunately, "old" VARIG will no longer operate as a network airline and will therefore have to give up its membership in the alliance", said Jaan Albrecht, Star Alliance CEO.
If they can't support Star Alliance then there is no chance of them, currently, being in a position to support being a member of any other alliance. Perhaps, when VARIG get themselves back to being a sound machine they'll look at rejoining Star. Otherwise SkyTeam would be my second guess. Oneworld would be almost out of the question as we current have LAN.
